Book excerpt: By definition scientists are an inquisitive lot. But what are the scientific curiosities and concerns on the minds of Australians? What worries them, baffles them, and sets their curiosity meter to 10 out of 10? To find out, the Office of the Chief Scientist (OCS) took the nation’s intellectual temperature, surveying 1186 Australians: men and women aged 18 to 65, from all education levels and locations around Australia. The results frame this book: a collection of essays covering the diverse areas of science Australians are curious about. Edited by eminent science writer Leigh Dayton and including a foreword from Australia’s Chief Scientist, Ian Chubb. The collection covers a range of issues, including food and farming technology, environmental upheaval, health, fuel and energy technology and space exploration.

Book Urban Environmental Education Review

Download or read book Urban Environmental Education Review written by Alex Russ and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2017-06-06 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban Environmental Education Review explores how environmental education can contribute to urban sustainability. Urban environmental education includes any practices that create learning opportunities to foster individual and community well-being and environmental quality in cities. It fosters novel educational approaches and helps debunk common assumptions that cities are ecologically barren and that city people don't care for, or need, urban nature or a healthy environment. Topics in Urban Environmental Education Review range from the urban context to theoretical underpinnings, educational settings, participants, and educational approaches in urban environmental education. Chapters integrate research and practice to help aspiring and practicing environmental educators, urban planners, and other environmental leaders achieve their goals in terms of education, youth and community development, and environmental quality in cities. The ten-essay series Urban EE Essays, excerpted from Urban Environmental Education Review, may be found here: naaee.org/eepro/resources/urban-ee-essays. These essays explore various perspectives on urban environmental education and may be reprinted/reproduced only with permission from Cornell University Press.

Book Seth

    Book Details:
  • Author : Eric Hoffman
  • Publisher : Univ. Press of Mississippi
  • Release : 2015-02-04
  • ISBN : 1626743878
  • Pages : 355 pages

Download or read book Seth written by Eric Hoffman and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2015-02-04 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canadian cartoonist Gregory Gallant, pen name Seth, emerged as a cartoonist in the fertile period of the 1980s, when the alternative comics market boomed. Though he was influenced by mainstream comics in his teen years and did his earliest comics work on Mister X, a mainstream-style melodrama, Seth remains one of the least mainstream-inflected figures of the alternative comics' movement. His primary influences are underground comix, newspaper strips, and classic cartooning. These interviews, including one career-spanning, definitive interview between the volume editors and the artist published here for the first time, delve into Seth's output from its earliest days to the present. Conversations offer insight into his influences, ideologies of comics and art, thematic preoccupations, and major works, from numerous perspectives—given Seth's complex and multifaceted artistic endeavors. Seth's first graphic novel, It's a Good Life, If You Don't Weaken, announced his fascination with the past and with earlier cartooning styles. Subsequent works expand on those preoccupations and themes. Clyde Fans, for example, balances present-day action against narratives set in the past. The visual style looks polished and contemplative, the narrative deliberately paced; plot seems less important than mood or characterization, as Seth deals with the inescapable grind of time and what it devours, themes which recur to varying degrees in George Sprott, Wimbledon Green, and The Great Northern Brotherhood of Canadian Cartoonists.

Book Education for Sustainable Development

Book excerpt: This textbook aims at making a contribution towards advancing the necessary knowledge and skills required in order to teach on the subject of sustainable development. Part I of the book presents the history of humankinds interaction with the natural world from the hunter-gatherer period up to the industrial societies of today. There is also a particular focus on how current environmental commitment has evolved, transformed and intensified over the years. Part II focuses on four current ways of putting environmental and developmental issues into perspective: An ecological perspective on what characterises the natural world; an environmentally ethical perspective on the different ways of morally relating to the natural world; a political perspective on environmental and developmental issues; and an economical perspective applied as a means of achieving sustainable development. Part III deals with educational aspects including: A comparison between Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and other traditions within Environmental Education; a discussion on the democratic role of education; a perspective on the learning process; a presentation of a teaching perspective on ESD; and finally a study of the practical implications of ESD.
