Book Applied High Speed Plate Penetration Dynamics

Download or read book Applied High Speed Plate Penetration Dynamics written by Gabi Ben-Dor and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-02-22 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-speed impact dynamics is of interest in the fundamental sciences, e.g., astrophysics and space sciences, and has a number of important applications in military technologies, homeland security and engineering. When compared with experiments or numerical simulations, analytical approaches in impact mechanics only seldom yield useful results. However, when successful, analytical approaches allow us to determine general laws that are not only important in themselves but also serve as benchmarks for subsequent numerical simulations and experiments. The main goal of this monograph is to demonstrate the potential and effectiveness of analytical methods in applied high-speed penetration mechanics for two classes of problem. The first class of problem is shape optimization of impactors penetrating into ductile, concrete and some composite media. The second class of problem comprises investigation of ballistic properties and optimization of multi-layered shields, including spaced and two-component ceramic shields. Despite the massive use of mathematical techniques, the obtained results have a clear engineering meaning and are presented in an easy-to-use form. One of the chapters is devoted solely to some common approximate models, and this is the first time that a comprehensive description of the localized impactor/medium interaction approach is given. In the monograph the authors present systematically their theoretical results in the field of high-speed impact dynamics obtained during the last decade which only partially appeared in scientific journals and conferences proceedings.

Book Notes on Projectile Impact Analyses

Download or read book Notes on Projectile Impact Analyses written by Hao Wu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-04-23 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents comprehensive experimental, numerical, and theoretical research on projectile impact analysis, such as the rigid projectile penetration/perforation of concrete and metallic targets, and shaped-charge-formed projectile and jet penetrations. Concrete and metal materials are widely used in protective structures in both civil engineering and armored vehicles, such as military fortifications, underground shelters, infantry fighting vehicles, and tanks, which are designed to withstand intentional or accidental impact loadings caused by projectiles and fragments, and the responses of these targets under projectile impact have been a topic of discussion for several decades. Written for researchers and engineers working in the fields of protective structures and high-speed penetration mechanics, the book is also a valuable reference for senior undergraduate and postgraduate students majoring in defense engineering, terminal ballistics and other related fields.

Book Hypervelocity Penetration Impacts in Concrete Targets

Download or read book Hypervelocity Penetration Impacts in Concrete Targets written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electromagnetic launch offers the acceleration of projectiles to velocities larger than those provided by conventional chemical guns. The potential effect of large-impact energies on targets other than armor has great promise for replacing high-explosive (HE) payloads with inert hypervelocity rounds. A double-layer reinforced concrete (DLRC) wall, which has been reduced in scale, was the target. Tests were conducted with aluminum cylindrical projectiles launched at velocities up to 2,223 m/s for a 46-g slug and 1,462 m/s for a 92-g slug. Data concerning the muzzle velocity and target damage were recorded. Additionally, the residual penetration into an aluminum plate was recorded. The diameter of the hole in the concrete target increased form 100 mm to the full lateral dimension of the target (450 mm), with increasing impact velocity. The data suggest that there was increased damage to the concrete target by an impact from a hypervelocity slug, as compared to an equal-energy impact at ordnance velocity. Although residual penetration was minimal with the smaller projectile, additional engineering and tests with a bimetallic slug may be able to balance terminal performance and further demonstrate the utility of hypervelocity.

Book Analysis of Projectile Penetration Into Concrete and Rock Targets

Download or read book Analysis of Projectile Penetration Into Concrete and Rock Targets written by Behzad Rohani and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents several examples of penetration calculations for rigid projectiles impacting concrete and rock targets. The calculations were performed with a computer code which is based on the theory of dynamic cavity expansion in an elastic-plastic compressible continuum. The results of the penetration calculations compare favorably with available data from field experiments and with the results from published finite-difference code calculations. The influence of various target material parameters, different initial impact velocities, and projectile size and shape changes on concrete and rock penetration was also assessed. The accuracy and range of application of the penetration model, however, must still be determined experimentally under more diverse impact conditions.

Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer. This book was released on 1990-01-31 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 32 (thesis year 1987) a total of 12,483 theses titles from 22 Canadian and 176 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 32 reports theses submitted in 1987, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book Concrete Penetration by Eroding Projectiles Experiments and Analysis

Download or read book Concrete Penetration by Eroding Projectiles Experiments and Analysis written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spherical-nose copper and tantalum rods with aspect ratios between 4.0 and 14.6 were gun launched against 91-cm dia and 91-cm long concrete and simulant reinforced concrete targets with velocities ranging from 0.15 cmlps to 0.19 cm1%s. Targets were instrumented with a sequence of break gages which provided valuable data for characterizing the penetration process. Target hole profiles and projectile residual masses were measured and reported. Analysis of the penetration performance of projectiles was performed within the framework of the modified hydrodynamic theory of penetration. Based on the results of these calculations, the penetration efficiencies of the copper and the tantalum projectiles are compared as functions of impact velocities. Analysis of the penetration resistance of the simulant reinforced concrete targets was based on treating the targets as composites", comprised of layers of concrete proper and reinforcing steel; the results of these calculations are compared with the experimental data. Using this theory, the penetration resistance of a concrete/steel/concrete composite" is investigated as a function of the following parameters: thickness of the surface layer of the concrete, thickness of the steel reinforcement, and impact velocity.
