Book Assessing Climate Change Impact on Tree Growth and Yield in Newfoundland with Process Based and Statistic Models

Download or read book Assessing Climate Change Impact on Tree Growth and Yield in Newfoundland with Process Based and Statistic Models written by Rony Mazumder and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest Growth and Yield (G&Y) modelling is essential for timber supply analysis and sustainable forest management. Empirical G& Y models are typically developed based on historical data obtained from permanent sample plots (PSP) with an assumption that forest will grow back at the same rate as in the past. With the predicted trend of global warming, growth and yield projections with traditional G& Y models would become invalid because the projected climate change will likely affect forest growth in the future. Therefore, new and innovative approaches are required to account for the potential impacts of climate change on tree growth and yield predictions. In this study, process based and statistical models were used to assess climate change on forest growth and yield in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. A process based model (JABOWAIII) was used to assess the impact of climate change on forest G& Y. The model was calibrated with seventy PSPs that cover the entire spectrum of soil and weather conditions. The model results were used to estimate species specific climate change modifiers, which can be used to adjust the existing yield curves to account for the effects of climate change. A multiple regression and an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) models that take into account biophysical conditions and historical climate factors were developed to predict the G& Y of individual trees of forest stands. Thirteen independent variables were included in the statistical based G&Y model. Stand and tree-level independent variables included species distribution, stand age, tree height, tree diameter, stand basal area. Biophysical and climate variables including growing degree days, potential solar radiation, and annual precipitation were also included in the new model as input variables. First- and second-level auto-correlations of growth in individual trees were also considered in the models. Results from the ANN-model were compared with those produced with linear-regression models. Both JABOWAHIII model and statistical model predicted that forest G& Y will be negatively affected by warmer temperature. Uncertainties related to both process-based models and statistical models are also discussed in the thesis.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The time lag between the introduction of a new species and its growth to marketability, and that between development of a successful pathogen-control strategy and the recovery of the affected forest, limit adaptive capacity in forestry. [...] Research has concentrated on the Gulf Ferry-TCH system in western Newfoundland on the impacts of frost wedging on slope failures in western Newfoundland and the Burin Peninsula, and on the influence of coastal ice conditions in Labrador. [...] Discontinuous patches are present in southern Labrador, and at altitude in the Mealy Mountains and the interior of the Northern Peninsula (Berger et al., 1992; Clark and Schmidlin, 1992). [...] Lakes and wetlands are subject to changes in chemistry and organic content under the influences of changes in temperature and hydrologic regime (Bello and Smith, 1990; Blenckner et al., 2006; Clair et al, 1996; Petzold, 1980; Prowse et al, 2009; Schindler et al., 1990; Walker et al, 1991). [...] Marine and freshwater aquatic species are discussed in the Marine and Fisheries and the Water sections of this review, respectively.

Book excerpt: It is now widely accepted that adaptation will be necessary if we are to manage the risks posed by climate change. What we know about adaptation, however, is limited. While there is a well established body of scholarship proposing assessment approaches and explaining concepts, few studies have examined if and how adaptation is taking place at a national or regional level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humans and human mobility, including driving and flying, are entangled with the climate emergency. Fossil-fuelled mobility worsens severe weather, and in turn, severe weather disrupts human mobility. A shift to zero-emission vehicles is critical but insufficient to repair the damage or prepare communities for the coming disruptions severe weather will bring. In Under the Weather Stephanie Sodero explores the intersection between human mobility and severe weather. Anchored in two Atlantic Canadian hurricane case studies, Hurricane Juan in Mi'kma'ki/Nova Scotia in 2003 and Hurricane Igor in Ktaqmkuk/Newfoundland in 2010, the book contributes to contemporary cultural and policy discussions by offering five practical recommendations – revolutionize mobility, prioritize vital mobility of medical goods and services, embrace ecological mobilities, rebrand redundancy, and think flexibly – for how mobility can be reimagined to work with, rather than against, the climate in ways that also benefit the health, education, and economy of local communities. This ecological approach to mobilities sheds light on extreme mobility dependency and the impact of mobility disruptions on the ground in Canadian communities. Focusing on the entangled relationship between human mobility and the climate, Under the Weather examines how communities can transform their relationship with mobility to enable greater resilience.
