Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the United States, a majority of students graduate below proficiency in all academic subjects. Parents of struggling students feel overwhelmed and confused about how to help their children simply survive school, let alone succeed. Various school reform efforts have been tried and all have failed. But all hope is not lost. A science exists that allows children to learn as individuals even though at school they are educated in groups. One that avoids senseless labels that sentence children to lifetimes of failure and mediocrity. Dr. Kimberly Berens and a team of scientists have spent the last 20 years perfecting a powerful system of instruction based on the learning, behavioral, and cognitive sciences that they call Fit Learning. This method of teaching has been proven to markedly improve how students understand and achieve, even for children who have been told they have learning disabilities or other disorders that interfere with their ability to learn. Blind Spots reveals the history of our broken education system and shows that by using this teaching system in the classroom, we can unlock the vast potential hidden within every child.

Book History and Educational Policymaking

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book an eminent scholar and policymaker analyzes the lessons history can teach those who wish to reform the American educational system.Maris Vinovskis begins by tracing the evolving role of the federal government in educational research, providing a historical perspective at a time when there is some movement to abolish the U.S. Department of Education. He then focuses on early childhood education, exploring trends in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. He examines the troubling history of the Follow Through Program, which existed from 1967 to 1994 to help Head Start children make the transition into the regular schools, and he reviews the development of the Even Start Program, which works to improve the literacy of disadvantaged parents while providing early childhood education for their children. He discusses changing views toward the economic benefits of education and critically assesses the validity and usefulness of the idea of systemic or standards-based reform. Finally he develops a conceptual framework for mapping and analyzing education research and reform activities.

Book Designing Project based Science

Download or read book Designing Project based Science written by Joseph L. Polman and published by . This book was released on 2000-01 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interpretive case study of an exceptional teacher provides a fascinating account of the difficulties and rewards of putting innovative teaching into practice. Joseph Polman uses richly detailed descriptions of classroom life to explore one teacher's attempts to make technology-enhanced, open-ended inquiry a successful mode of teaching science in the secondary school classroom. The book provides lively examples of what it means to "learn by doing," describing strategies that educators can use to move beyond traditional textbook approaches and interact with their students in ways that encourage them to become active science learners. The book explores the complexity of changing practice, detailing the conflicts that emerge when a teacher challenges traditional approaches to teaching and learning, and provides a historical and theoretical background for understanding current controversies in educational practices. By analyzing teacher and student work within the context of the entire school, Polman demonstrates how the structural and cultural realities of the school itself complicate the enactment of pedagogical innovation in the classroom.

Book Responsible Fruits Project follow up survey results

[Author] [Author]. This book was released on 2024-07-24 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The project “Building responsible global value chains for the sustainable production and trade of tropical fruits” (the Responsible Fruits Project) supports avocado and pineapple industry actors to strengthen or establish risk-based due diligence systems with the aim of making their operations more sustainable and resilient to shocks. In 2021, a baseline survey was conducted targeting avocado and pineapple producers, packers and their organizations, and trade associations (collectively referred to as “companies” in this report for the sake of simplicity). In March 2024, a follow-up survey was undertaken with 44 avocado or pineapple companies who had actively participated in the Responsible Fruits Project. The objectives of the follow-up survey were to: 1. Update existing information on sustainability challenges faced by avocado and pineapple companies to understand if these challenges have changed, and if any progress has been made on addressing previously identified problems and risks; 2. Identify the extent to which project participants have been able to incorporate information and outputs from the project to support their business in a positive way; and 3. Find out if project participants are interested in establishing a multistakeholder initiative as a means of moving beyond the project in the future. This is the full report on the follow-up survey and an analysis of its results. A brief summary report is also available.
