Book Atlas of Atherosclerosis Progression and Regression

Download or read book Atlas of Atherosclerosis Progression and Regression written by Herbert C. Stary and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2003-06-04 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Completely revised and updated, the Second Edition of the Atlas of Atherosclerosis Progression and Regression contains new material and new illustrations from Dr. Stary's groundbreaking work in the field of atherosclerosis diagnosis, prevention, and treatment. Over 100 photographs show arterial and lesion structure and individual components in unprecedented detail. These images allow you to compare and contrast healthy arteries with those developing and regressing lesions. They illustrate the successive steps in the natural history of human atherosclerotic disease from the microscopically visible, lipid-filled macrophages in susceptible locations of arteries to lesion forms that produce clinical symptoms. The book provides an up-to-date, pathology-based framework of morphologies of atherosclerotic vascular lesions that serves as a basis for correlation with morphologies determined by a variety of clinical imaging techniques. Demonstrating the evolution of arterial lesions form the clinically silent to the clinically relevant, An Atlas of Atherosclerosis Progression and Regression is a teaching aid and diagnostic tool for recognizing changes in lesion progression, stabilization, or regression. About the author: Dr. Stary is Professor of Pathology at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. He came to New Orleans via the Departments of Pathology of the McGill (Montreal) and Yale (New Haven) Medical Schools. For 7 years, Dr. Stary also served as chairman of the American Heart Association's Committee on Vascular Lesions.

Book Frontiers in Cardiovascular Health

Download or read book Frontiers in Cardiovascular Health written by Naranjan S. Dhalla and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Frontiers in Cardiovascular Health varies between and within nations, depend ing upon the level at which the battle is fought for better cardiovascular health. According to the 1997 World Health Report, 15 million deaths (i. e. 30% of the total number of deaths) were attributable to cardiovascular diseases and this number is on the rise. The projection for the year 2020 is quite alarming with an expected cardiovascular mortality reaching 50 million. Much of this burden is projected to occur in developing countries, more specifically in the most populous countries of the world, namely China and India. These countries are already burdened with infectious and parasitic diseases and are trying to eradicate such diseases. With increasing life expectancies people all over the world, especially in developing coun tries, are exposed to degenerative atherosclerosis resulting in increased cardiovascu lar mortality and morbidity. In developing countries, resources available for health care are very limited. For example many of the African countries spend less than $10 per person per year on his/her entire health care let alone cardiovascular health. The average health care budget for nearly two thirds of the global population is well below $100 per year, on a per capita basis. Therefore, in developing countries health promotion and primary prevention are the frontiers by necessity. Improving awareness and health education is not only a matter of choice but is an absolute necessity.

Book Imaging Coronary Atherosclerosis

Download or read book Imaging Coronary Atherosclerosis written by Stephen J. Nicholls and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-06-04 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over 50 years, coronary angiography has been the mainstay of diagnosing and quantifying the extent of coronary artery disease. However appreciation of the inherent limitations of conventional angiography has led to a plethora of new imaging modalities, each with their relative strengths and potential pitfalls. Advances in these techniques have given clinicians, as well as researchers, an overwhelming amount of information and the need for thoughtful interpretation. This outstanding book provides a comprehensive overview of the current status of imaging of coronary atherosclerosis. Covering the wide variety of available imaging modalities, the book provides state-of-the-art knowledge from leading authorities in each area. In their discussion, the authors include both invasive and non-invasive modalities, including the gold standard coronary angiography, the growing field of IVUS, and novel techniques such as functional imaging, molecular imaging, and the integration of biomarkers. The key concepts and practical information given in this volume will provide the reader with the necessary understanding to choosing appropriate imaging studies and building confidence in their skill set with each.

Plentiful color photos and illustrations will enable readers to investigate and classify plaques and thrombi and to evaluate coronary stent- and drug-based therapies. The authors are leading researchers on angioscopy. This book offers the perfect guide not only for new clinicians but also for cardiologists who have already adopted this technique for medical examination and treatment. Angioscopy is a unique medical technique for visualizing the interior of blood vessels and helps physicians not only to diagnose the pathology but also to measure the effectiveness of Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) or antiarteriosclerotic drugs. Furthermore, the recently developed molecular angioscopy approach allows us to observe Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxide, collagen, and macrophages, and is rapidly growing in importance.

Book Progress in quantitative coronary arteriography

Download or read book Progress in quantitative coronary arteriography written by Johan H. C. Reiber and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the fifth volume in this series on quantitative coronary arteriography (QCA) published over the last nine years. Research and applications in this exciting, field are covered in a total of 26 chapters by world renowned experts. This book is subdivided into a total of 6 parts, each emphasizing the latest progress in these respective fields. In Part One a comprehensive overview is given of the current knowledge and research in endothelial function, which is of eminent importance for the further understanding of the pathophysiology of coronary artery disease in patients. Fortunately, the use of QCA tools is not limited anymore to leading research institutes; over the last several years these tools have been installed in many cardiology centers world wide. To understand the current possibili ties, limitations and future expectations of QCA, several relevant topics are presented in Part Two. First of all, the questions about why and how QCA systems should be validated both at the development site and at the appli cation sites, and whether data from different vendors and core laboratories can be pooled, are discussed. As the X-ray cardiovascular world steadily moves into the digital imaging era, differences and similarities between the conventional cinefilm and the modern digital approaches are presented. Cur rently. the widespread use of digital imaging is still hindered by the lack of proper archival and exchange media. Requirements and possible solutions for this problem are handled in this section as well.
