Book Policy on Protecting Critical Habitat with Conservation Agreements Under Section 11 of the Species at Risk Act

Download or read book Policy on Protecting Critical Habitat with Conservation Agreements Under Section 11 of the Species at Risk Act written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 2 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Section 11 of the Species at Risk Act ('SARA', the Act) authorizes a competent minister to enter into a conservation agreement to benefit a species at risk or enhance its survival in the wild. The agreement must provide for the taking of conservation measures consistent with the purposes of the Act, and may include measures with respect to protecting the species' habitat, including its critical habitat. Sections 58 and 61 of the Act indicate that a section 11 agreement can serve as a mechanism to protect critical habitat. Further to the draft Policy on the Protection of Critical Habitat on Non-Federal Lands, this document provides a policy statement, and the criteria that will be applied to determine whether or not a particular section 11 agreement protects critical habitat under sections 58 or 61 of the Act"--Page 1.

Book The Species at Risk Act and Critical Habitat for Aquatic Species

Download or read book The Species at Risk Act and Critical Habitat for Aquatic Species written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For years now, it has been recognized that to prevent wildlife species from becoming extinct, their habitat must be protected. Canada's Species at Risk Act (SARA) presents new requirements for identifying critical habitat-and new measures for protecting it. Whether you're installing a new culvert, starting a new dredging operation, or developing a hydroelectric power dam, here's what you should know about SARA. The Species at Risk Act (SARA) was created to prevent wildlife species from becoming extinct. It requires Canada to provide for the recovery of species at risk due to human activity, and to manage species of special concern, making sure they don't become endangered or threatened. SARA not only prohibits the killing, harming, harassing, capturing or taking of species at risk, but also makes it illegal to destroy their critical habitats. The Act became law in June 2003, and becomes enforceable in June 2004.

Download or read book Politics of the Wild written by Karen Beazley and published by Don Mills, Ont. : Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Politics of the Wild details the 353 species at risk in Canada and considers both the intrinsic and the instrumental reasons for protecting biological diversity. It examines the need for habitat protection, terrestrial protected areas such as national parks, marine species at risk, and the various legislative and interest group attempts to preserve biodiversity. Public policy on endangered species is considered from both historical and comparative perspectives, as is Canada's role in establishing international agreements--the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species and the Convention on Biological Diversity--and the government's failure in recent years to meet the obligations of these and other environmental agreements. The final chapter looks at the Species at Risk Act (SARA) and its recent predecessor, Bill C-65, and reveals the difficulties of crafting and passing such legislation in an increasingly decentralized federal state such as Canada. Both legislative attempts were criticized--by the environmental policy community for not doing enough, and by the provinces and business for trying to do too much. All the while, diverse regional interests and economic imperatives run the risk of endangering far more than merely Canadian species at risk.

Book Policy Analysis in Canada

Download or read book Policy Analysis in Canada written by Laurent Dobuzinskis and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2007-06-30 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growth of what some academics refer to as 'the policy analysis movement' represents an effort to reform certain aspects of government behaviour. The policy analysis movement is the result of efforts made by actors inside and outside formal political decision-making processes to improve policy outcomes by applying systematic evaluative rationality to the development and implementation of policy options. This volume offers a comprehensive overview of the many ways in which the policy analysis movement has been conducted, and to what effect, in Canadian governments and, for the first time, in business associations, labour unions, universities, and other non-governmental organizations. Editors Laurent Dobuzinskis, Michael Howlett, and David Laycock have brought together a wide range of contributors to address questions such as: What do policy analysts do? What techniques and approaches do they use? What is their influence on policy-making in Canada? Is there a policy analysis deficit? What norms and values guide the work done by policy analysts working in different institutional settings? Contributors focus on the sociology of policy analysis, demonstrating how analysts working in different organizations tend to have different interests and to utilize different techniques. They compare and analyze the significance of these different styles and approaches, and speculate about their impact on the policy process.
