Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each chapter describes the dynamics or tensions within a specific marine sector or policy community. Collectively, the contributors raise critical questions about the process, structure, and function of Canadian oceans policy, covering topics such as the Atlantic fishery, conservation, ocean science and technology, shipping, aboriginal rights, defence, and pollution. The book conveys a cautiously optimistic message: although Canada does not yet have a comprehensive oceans policy, there is growing evidence that the problem, policy, and political streams are converging. Canada must be ready to respond to this policy opportunity with clear objectives and appropriate program elements that mediate between competing interests and conflicting values. Those who construct Canada's oceans policy must be capable of calculating risks and challenging the status quo to create a workable, sustainable framework for oceans governance in our increasingly complex world. The contributors to this collection are Robert Boardman, Darlene Boyle, Mark Butler, Scott F. Coffen, Raymond P. Côté, Graham Day, Lloyd M. Dickie, Gaye Drescher, Wade Elliot, Terry Fenge, Julia Gardner, Robert Gorham, Cynthia Lamson, Josée M. Parent, Randall Prime, Barbara Riley, Timothy A. Smith, John Somers, and Jeffrey L.C. Wright.

Download or read book Montreal City of Water written by Michèle Dagenais and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Built within an exceptional watershed, Montreal is intertwined with the waterways that ring its island and flow beneath it in underground networks. Even as the city has pushed its suburbs deeper into the interior of the island and onto the mainland, the daily lives and leisure activities of its inhabitants remain closely bound to water. Montreal, City of Water focuses on water not only as a physical element of the landscape – both shaping and shaped by urban development – but also as a sociocultural component of the life of the city. In exploring the dynamics governing the relationship between Montrealers and their environment, this unique study considers the role of water in the production and transformation of urban space over two centuries. It traces the history of urbanization and shines a light on current concerns about water pollution, river rehabilitation, and renewed public access to the riverfront – and the power relations involved in addressing those concerns.

Book Urban Runoff Pollution

Download or read book Urban Runoff Pollution written by Harry C. Torno and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 888 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In most of the developed countries of the,World, significant efforts to control the pollution of surface waters have been underway for decades, and particularly the last 10-15 years. These efforts have focused mainly on eliminating or mitiga ting the effects of point sources of pollution. In many ca ses, however, it is clear that we have achieved only limited improvement in water quality, and that non-point sources of pollution are going to control any further improvement. It has long been known that urban runoff is a major non-point source, and much research has been done in an attempt to un derstand the mechanisms and processes which govern this source and to reduce or eliminate its impacts. Many urban jurisdic tions have adopted urban runoff pollution control measures, in spite of the fact that there is a great deal that we still do not know, and without really being able to quantify the benefits achieved. A major problem is that while a great deal of work is being done, both in Europe and North America, it is very difficult to keep abreast of new developments. The Urban Water Resources Research Council of the American Society of Civil Engineers has for many years had as one of its major objectives the transfer of urban runoff technology among researchers and practitioners in the field, as well as to those engineers who are not in the forefront but who nonetheless need the information on the latest developments.

Book Assessing the Ecological Integrity of Running Waters

Download or read book Assessing the Ecological Integrity of Running Waters written by M. Jungwirth and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-06-30 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The assessment of the ecological integrity of running waters is a prerequisite to an understanding of the effects of human alterations. The evaluation of degradation processes provides key information on how to avoid further negative impacts. The success of future conservation, mitigation and restoration activities will rely on sound assessment methodologies and their ecological relevance and applicability. Assessment methodologies are therefore an integral part of sustainable river management. This book synthesizes and discusses state-of-the-art experiences in assessment methodologies. Including the latest knowledge on structures, processes and functions of running waters as a fundamental basis for developing adequate assessment methods, the book focuses on method development, application, and in particular on integrated assessment methods. This book is directed at scientists and managers with the aim of more effective preservation, restoration and maintenance of the ecological integrity of running water ecosystems.

Book Proceedings First Canadian Conference on Urban Infrastructure

Download or read book Proceedings First Canadian Conference on Urban Infrastructure written by Daniel W. Smith and published by Edmonton, Alta. : Sodanell Canada. This book was released on 1987 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Conference on Urban Infrastructure was a meeting of those concerned with maintaining the quality of Canadian cities in light of several recent studies which showed a serious deterioration of roadways, water systems, stormwater control facilities, public buildings, bridges, and wastewater management systems. The document presents conference proceedings, with full texts of speeches and workshop sessions whose underlying theme was that the urban planning process must allow for operation, maintenance and renewal activities. Sessions contain five papers each on the following themes: the state of urban infrastructure; financing urban infrastructure renewal; managing urban infrastructure renewal; engineering for urban infrastructure renewal (including prospects for district heating and cooling in Toronto, the upgrading of wastewater treatment plants, and municipality liability); underground piping systems; transportation systems (including needs for smaller transit systems); urban structures (including indoor air quality and the sick building syndrome, deterioration of parking garages, bridge structures, and high-rise buildings); and urban infrastructure renewal experience, education and action (includes the Montreal experience).
