Silvia Grandi, Economic Geography Research Group This is a valuable book. The individual chapters contain original case-study evidence and analytical insights. . . it is one that should be consulted by any scholar working in the area if industrial agglomerations and new technology. Simona Iammarino, Economic Geography This book, a collaborative effort by researchers from Japan, Italy and the USA, seeks to explore the reasons for industrial clustering in certain regions of Asia, Europe and North America. The studies presented illustrate real examples of industrial clusters, adding anecdotal evidence to the emerging theory of economic geography by exemplifying the centripetal and centrifugal forces that regulate the clustering process. The authors examine clusters in a diverse set of countries including China, Italy, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, the USA and Vietnam. Significantly, the book provides an interesting split between studies of IT and software-related industries, and more traditional sectors, such as steel and vehicle manufacturing. Industrial Agglomeration and New Technologies pays attention to a varied array of factors that influence clustering, such as knowledge spillovers, tacit knowledge, communication and transport costs, and the effects of various government policies. The case studies provide useful examples for government and industry leaders, as well as a starting point for researchers seeking an ultimate answer to the question: Why do firms form clusters?

Book Innovation Systems Policy and Management

Download or read book Innovation Systems Policy and Management written by Jorge Niosi and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-02 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Innovation is a systemic phenomenon in which institutions, such as firms, government entities and public policy incentives, interact in complex ways. Targeting specific sectors of an economy in order to improve the competitiveness and capabilities of domestic firms, interventionist innovation policies can result in the structural transformation of host economies. Numerous examples exist of such policies working successfully in emerging economies and they can be applied to any economic sector, although they are commonly associated with highly innovative industries such ICT, biotechnology and nanotechnology. Innovation Systems, Policy and Management describes how institutions and markets can best be structured in order to promote innovation in key economic sectors. Bringing together some of the leading figures in industrial policy and the economics of innovation and entrepreneurship, this book encourages the reader to think in terms of systems and business dynamics when analysing innovation behaviour, providing an approach useful to policy makers, business leaders and scholars of evolutionary economics.

This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seemingly unlimited technological potential of nanotechnology brings with it new practices of governance, networking, and exercising power and agency. Focusing on scholars in the Global South, this text covers nanotechnology discourses, imaginaries, and materialities as they circulate and interact within governance knowledge networks. Rather than adapt their actions to existing governance mechanisms and science, technology, and innovation policy, scientists use the imaginary of nanotechnology to create new symbolic and material incentives, thus shaping its governance. By tracing the constantly shifting asymmetries of knowledge and power, the book offers fresh insights into the dynamics of knowledge networks.

Book Theory and Practice of the Triple Helix Model in Developing Countries

Download or read book Theory and Practice of the Triple Helix Model in Developing Countries written by Mohammed Saad and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2011-02-25 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theory and Practice of Triple Helix Model in Developing Countries contributes to the expanding literature on "triple helix" innovation - focusing on developing countries. The book is based on practical cases and experiences from Africa, Latin America and Asia. Relevant experiences and best practices from developed countries are also examined. The book is presented as a response to the growing awareness about the need for policy shift from the traditional technology transfer practice to a policy position that is capable of providing a sustainable basis for innovation and technological progress in developing countries. The book explores the triple helix system of innovation based on the dynamics of the interactive relationships between government, industry and universities in the creation, dissemination and sharing of knowledge in developing countries. A major point addressed by the book is the extent to which the ‘triple helix’ system of relationships between university, industry and government can enhance the effectiveness of universities in developing countries as agents of innovation, industrialization and sustainable development.
