Book Implementing a National Cancer Clinical Trials System for the 21st Century

Download or read book Implementing a National Cancer Clinical Trials System for the 21st Century written by Board on Health Care Services and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2013-09-27 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Clinical Trials Network (NCTN) supported by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) has played an integral role in cancer research and in establishing the standard of care for cancer patients for more than 50 years. Formerly known as the NCI Clinical Trials Cooperative Group Program, the NCTN is comprised of more than 2,100 institutions and 14,000 investigators, who enroll more than 20,000 cancer patients in clinical trials each year across the United States and internationally. Recognizing the recent transformative advances in cancer research that necessitate modernization in how cancer clinical trials are run, as well as inefficiencies and other challenges impeding the national cancer clinical trials program, the NCI asked the IOM to develop a set of recommendations to improve the federally funded cancer clinical trials system. These recommendations were published in the 2010 report, A National Cancer Clinical Trials System for the 21st Century: Reinvigorating the NCI Cooperative Group Program. In early 2011, the NCPF and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) held a workshop in which stakeholders discussed the changes they planned to implement in response to the IOM goals and recommendations. Two years later, on February 11-12, 2013, in Washington, DC, the NCPF and ASCO reconvened stakeholders to report on the changes they have made thus far to address the IOM recommendations. At this workshop, representatives from the NCI, the NCTN, comprehensive cancer centers, patient advocacy groups, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), industry, and other stakeholders highlighted the progress that has been made in achieving the goals for a reinvigorated national cancer clinical trials system. Implementing a National Cancer Clinical Trials System for the 21st Century is a summary of that workshop.

These contaminants impact sensitive natural resources in wilderness, including the national parks. The system of national parks in the United States is among our greatest assets. This book provides a compilation and synthesis of current scientific understanding regarding the causes and effects of these pollutants within national park lands. It describes pollutant emissions, deposition, and exposures; it identifies the critical (tipping point) loads of pollutant deposition at which adverse impacts are manifested.

Book An Introduction to the Use of Anticancer Drugs

Download or read book An Introduction to the Use of Anticancer Drugs written by Imran Rafi and published by Elsevier Health Sciences. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title is directed primarily towards health care professionals outside of the United States. The aim of this book is to provide an introduction to the principles of drug treatment for solid tumours in cancer medicine. Developments in the understanding of tumour biology, molecular biology and genetics - together with the greater understanding of the pharmacology and pharmacokinetics of drugs - have combined to open up the field of medical oncology to rapid advances in the treatment of cancers. The range of drugs that are available is wide and one of the primary aims in drug development is to increase the therapeutic window so that drug toxicity is minimised and tolerable. Drug development of oral formulations of anticancer drugs and the use of drugs that could be given in the day patient setting means that healthcare professionals such as general practitioners - who historically might not have been involved in the drug treatment of the cancer patient - are now going to need to have a greater understanding of the principles of use of anticancer drugs. This book is primarily aimed at this market. Basic principles of drug treatment - develops an understanding of why and when anticancer drugs are used. Covers the purpose of clinical trials in oncology from Phase I to Phase IV trials in drug development. Discusses the organisation of clinical networks in the UK. Case studies in cancer treatment, allowing an understanding of when and why the typical regimes are used. NICE guidelines.

Book We the People

Download or read book We the People written by Thomas Linzey and published by PM Press. This book was released on 2016-11-24 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We the People offers powerful portraits of communities across the United States that have faced threats from environmentally destructive corporate projects and responded by successfully banning those projects at a local level. We hear the inspiring voices of ordinary citizens and activists practicing a cutting-edge form of organizing developed by the nonprofit law firm, the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund (CELDF). Their methodology is an answer for the frustrations of untold numbers of activists who have been defeated time and again by corporate political power and legal entitlement. Instead of fighting against what we don’t want, this book can teach us to create from the ground up what we do want, basing our vision in local control and law. By refusing to cooperate with the unjust laws that favor corporate profit over local sustainability, communities can show the way forward, driving their rights into state constitutions and, eventually, into the federal Constitution. In communities from New Hampshire to Oregon, new forms of local organizing have sprung up to fight fracking, mining, dumping of toxic waste, and industrial agriculture, among other environmental assaults. These communities have recognized that the law has “legalized” the damaging actions of corporations, while providing no recourse against harm, and they have therefore decided to create a new system of law that makes local control and sustainability legal. Starting small, this process has spread from rural Pennsylvania to larger cities and towns, and has resulted in the creation of state networks seeking to amend state constitutions. This work is about finishing the American Revolution by giving up the illusion of democracy and forging a system of true self-governance. In addition, this is about recognizing in law, for the first time in history, that nature possesses legally enforceable rights of its own.
