Book Profit and Plunder Under Sail

Download or read book Profit and Plunder Under Sail written by Roger Horton and published by . This book was released on 2020-09-21 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A great number of books have been written about boats and ships, most of them excellent. In fact, there are books written about single ships that are longer than this one. My purpose in writing another book on the world's vessels was to tie their evolution to history and human development. I wished to describe the part they played in war, trade, migration and of course, pure adventure. Why did certain vessels evolve; how did they influence human history and how did history influence them. This book separates vessels through time and by their use, by construction and world regions. I have tried to show what it was like for the crew aboard vessels, and what difficulties and perils they faced. This book was created to let you understand the vessels and the men who put to sea in them. To grasp the advance of the marine development of vessels driven by wind and muscle. How we got to where we are from the moment when the first of our ancestors straddled a log to cross a river. It is my hope that you will enjoy the read.

Book Pilot Cutters Under Sail

Download or read book Pilot Cutters Under Sail written by Tom Cunliffe and published by Seaforth Publishing. This book was released on 2013-07-03 with total page 740 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The popular sailing journalist celebrates the 19th century pilot cutters that operated across the UK and Northern Europe in this illustrated history. The pilot cutters that operated around the coasts of northern Europe until the First World War were some of the most seaworthy and beautiful craft ever built. With a hull and rig of particular elegance, their speed and close-windedness bought them an enviable reputation. Though many were lost, the few that survived have inspired yacht designers, sailors and traditional craft enthusiasts over the last century. Pilot Cutters Under Sail pays tribute to these remarkable vessels with a detailed history of their development and use on the rough waters of the European seaboard. Sailing expert Tom Cunliffe describes the ships themselves, their masters and crews, and the skills they needed for the competitive and dangerous work of pilotage. He explains the differences between the craft of disparate coasts—from the Scilly Isles and the Bristol Channel to northern France and the wild coastline of Norway. Woven into the history of their development are the stories of the men who sailed them.

Download or read book Pirate Hunting written by Benerson Little and published by Potomac Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2010-09-30 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For thousands of years pirates, privateers, and seafaring raiders have terrorized the ocean voyager and coastal inhabitant, plundering ship and shore with impunity. From the victim's point of view, these attackers were not the rebellious, romantic rulers of Neptune's realm, but savage beasts to be eradicated, and those who went to sea to stop them were heroes. Engaging and meticulously detailed, Pirate Hunting chronicles the fight against these plunderers from ancient times to the present and illustrates the array of tactics and strategies that individuals and governments have employed to secure the seas. Benerson Little lends further dimension to this unending battle by including the history of piracy and privateering, ranging from the Mycenaean rovers to the modern pirates of Somalia. He also introduces associated naval warfare; maritime commerce and transportation; the development of speed under oar, sail, and steam; and the evolution of weaponry. More than just a vivid account of the war that seafarers and pirates have waged, Pirate Hunting is invaluable reading in a world where acts of piracy are once more a significant threat to maritime commerce and voyagers. It will appeal to readers interested in the history of piracy, anti-piracy operations, and maritime, naval, and military history worldwide.

Book Privateering

  • Author : Faye M. Kert
  • Publisher : JHU Press
  • Release : 2015-09-30

  • Pages : 224 pages

Download or read book Privateering written by Faye M. Kert and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2015-09-30 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book to tell the tale of the War of 1812 from the privateers’ perspective. Winner of the John Lyman Book Award of the North American Society for Oceanic History During the War of 1812, most clashes on the high seas involved privately owned merchant ships, not official naval vessels. Licensed by their home governments and considered key weapons of maritime warfare, these ships were authorized to attack and seize enemy traders. Once the prizes were legally condemned by a prize court, the privateers could sell off ships and cargo and pocket the proceeds. Because only a handful of ship-to-ship engagements occurred between the Royal Navy and the United States Navy, it was really the privateers who fought—and won—the war at sea. In Privateering, Faye M. Kert introduces readers to U.S. and Atlantic Canadian privateers who sailed those skirmishing ships, describing both the rare captains who made money and the more common ones who lost it. Some privateers survived numerous engagements and returned to their pre-war lives; others perished under violent circumstances. Kert demonstrates how the romantic image of pirates and privateers came to obscure the dangerous and bloody reality of private armed warfare. Building on two decades of research, Privateering places the story of private armed warfare within the overall context of the War of 1812. Kert highlights the economic, strategic, social, and political impact of privateering on both sides and explains why its toll on normal shipping helped convince the British that the war had grown too costly. Fascinating, unfamiliar, and full of surprises, this book will appeal to historians and general readers alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advance praise for Underachieve with Ease: "Where was this book when I needed it?" (U. R. Anidiot, three-time divorcee) This is the book men and nosy women have been waiting for. Underachieve with Ease is the recently declassified manual of tried-and-sometimes-true secrets on how men can do as little as possible to satisfy the minimum requirements of marriage. This mother of all marriage books is liberally peppered with humor, outright speculation, and occasional inadvertent wisdom. In this book, men will learn valuable life skills such as how to avoid chores, cooking, and extended stays in the spousal doghouse. For women, this book answers the burning question: is there any hope of reforming my man into a functioning marital partner? Frustrated wives will mine important nuggets about how married men think and how to craft strategies to counter their chronic lack of effort. Any naive singles contemplating matrimony will also find this book a godsend as a warning for what lies ahead. The best news is this book is cheaper than therapy and may be tax-deductible. (Check with your accountant.) "Funny, clever and frighteningly wise." (Author's mother) "Joseph Pulitzer is rolling over in his grave." (Transylvania Literary Guild) Mark Allen is a maladjusted, cowering expert on the subject of matrimony, having been married thirty-plus years, with only three of those banished to sleeping on the sofa.
