It has also become more challenging, in part, because of the aging population and increasing health care and childcare costs. Research on family caregiving has underscored the struggles faced by caregivers, work-family conflicts, and financial strain. However, individuals' navigation of care responsibilities and paid work and their interactions with social insurance programs are underexamined, particularly for a growing subset of caregivers - young-adult caregivers. This dissertation explores and expands our understanding of the consequences of family caregiving, family caregivers' profiles, the economic impact on family caregivers, and the potential and limitations of public assistance programs in supporting them. This dissertation leverages publicly available survey data, the Panel Study of Income Dynamics and Survey of Income and Program Participation, Social Security historical data on income thresholds, and an array of econometric techniques to answer and discover current public policy concerns related to family caregiving. The findings of this dissertation contribute to the literature on caregiving for children and adults by showing that family caregiving during emerging young adulthood is negatively associated with an immediate decline in young adults' emotional well-being and a semi-long-term decline in their working hours. In addition, this dissertation shows that important state-level policies like the Paid Family Leave policy have limited effect on caregiver-households' financial security. Finally, it shows that the current Social Security Disability Insurance program eligibility structure is potentially contributing to sex and racial disparities in access by not considering the impact of young adult milestones, such as becoming a parent, on labor force engagement.

Nonetheless, recent studies estimate that between 14 and 18 percent of men ranging in ages from nineteen to later middle age are providing care to a family member or friend with a serious illness or disability. And in men 75 or older, there are more husbands caring for wives than vice versa. Also among persons caring for AIDS sufferers in central cities, over 50 percent are men. In light of these substantial numbers, plus demographic trends that will probably increase the proportion of male caregivers in the future, it is important to study men in caregiving roles to further our understanding of this critical area of healthcare.Drs. Further, it provides a valuable source of information for healthcare professionals and assists them with the development of care and treatment plans for the person with deficits in functional cognition. The 'Brief DLA Pre-Guide Checklist' and the 'DLA Guide' together with the 'Advanced Lifestyle Directive' will empower caregivers with a sense of self-efficacy as they are included in the information gathering process and the development of care plans. Realistically, not every person with deficits in functional cognition has a family or other informal caregivers available to provide the required information. Therefore, it is important healthcare professionals consult with care assistants who assist a person with deficits in functional cognition with their daily life activities. Observations described by many care assistants will assist in providing functional everyday information to develop a realistic care and treatment plan.
