It specifically addresses types of institutions they attended, educational experiences, and the relationship of their education cost and financial aid to the amount of time they worked while enrolled. The report presents data from the 1989-90 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study in narrative and tabular forms. Results suggest that not only are most undergraduates working while they are enrolled, a substantial number are working full time. Other highlights include: (1) about 75 percent of all (full and part time) undergraduates worked at some time during 1989-90 of which 40 percent reported working full time at some time while enrolled; (2) among undergraduates enrolled full time for a full academic year, about 22 percent worked full time at some time during their enrollment; (3) undergraduates who attended private, for-profit institutions were much less likely to work while enrolled (61 percent); (4) undergraduates who worked while enrolled were employed for most of their enrollment; (5) most undergraduates held jobs in the areas of administrative support, service occupations, blue collar occupations, marketing, and as sales clerks; and (6) women were less likely to work full time while enrolled than men. It relies on data from the 1992-93 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study, third in a series conducted by the Department of Education. The report begins with an essay that explores the extent to which undergraduates have outside responsibilities and enrollment patterns that increase their risk of not attaining a degree or postsecondary certificate. Following the essay, a compendium of tables provides comprehensive information about enrollment patterns, programs of study, student characteristics, financial aid receipt and employment, students' educational aspirations, and their community service participation. Not since the 1970s has the typical postsecondary student been a recent high school graduate enrolled full-time at a four-year school, and working toward a Bachelor's degree. On the contrary, such students represented only about one-third of undergraduates enrolled in 1992-93. The first section of the compendium contains detailed risk factor tables, and the remaining sections are marked to highlight topic findings. It profiles older undergraduates and compares them with younger undergraduates with regard to demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, enrollment patterns, how they combine working with studying, and the types, sources, and amounts of financial aid they receive. It describes the participation of selected subgroups of older undergraduates including those employed full time, those enrolled full time, those enrolled less than half time, those assisted by their employers, those without high school diplomas, and single parents. Examination of persistence and attainment among older students who enrolled in postsecondary education for the first time in 1989-90 covers combining working and studying, participation in campus activities and programs, and controlling factors related to persistence. Some of the report's highlights include: (1) in 1989-90, 42 percent of all undergraduates were 24 years or older; (2) a majority of older undergraduates were married and had dependents other than a spouse; (3) 59 percent of older undergraduates attended a public less-than-4-year institution (compared with 33 percent of younger undergraduates). Book excerpt: This report is a descriptive summary of data from the first follow-up of the 1990/92 Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study (BPS:90/92), a comprehensive examination of information on enrollment, persistence, and attainment in postsecondary education for students who began postsecondary education in 1989-90 regardless of when they completed high school. The BPS data also include detailed information about financial aid, employment, family formation, and civic and political participation of students. The BPS sample of 6,500 students was drawn from first-time students who participated in the 1990 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (NPSAS). Among these first findings are: (1) about half of the students originally enrolled in 2- to 3-year institutions, 42 percent enrolled in 4-year institutions and 9 percent enrolled in less-than-2-year institutions; (2) 47 percent of those who aspired to 2 or more years of college (but less than a bachelor's degree) when they first enrolled in postsecondary education, did not re-enroll in 1990-91; (3) during the first year of enrollment, 45 percent received some kind of financial aid; (4) of beginning students who worked while enrolled (87 percent of all students), 76 percent considered their primary role that of student; and (5) as of February 1992, 18 percent of the sample were married and an additional 5 percent had been previously married. It examined: (1) how enrollment status varied with a range of student and attendance characteristics; (2) differences in the composition of the part-time and full-time student population; (3) the grades earned by part-time undergraduates and the length of time they were enrolled in 1989-90; and (4) tuition costs and receipt of financial aid among part-time undergraduates. The report found that from 1970 to 1990, the number of part-time undergraduates more than doubled while full-time enrollment increased by one-third. It also found that half of all undergraduates in postsecondary education in 1989-90 were enrolled full time throughout their enrollment during the year; 36 percent were enrolled exclusively part time; and the remaining 14 percent changed their enrollment status during the year. Book excerpt: This report uses data from the 1995-96 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study to profile undergraduates who were enrolled in U.S. postsecondary institutions in the academic year 1995-96. The report begins with an essay that explores the extent to which undergraduates work while they are in school. This essay found that 79 percent of undergraduates reported working while in school; half worked to help pay for their education and 29 percent considered themselves primarily employees who were also taking classes. Working students were employed an average of 25 hours per week, with 20 percent of full-time students also working full-time. Working students noted that working limited their class schedules, and about 25 percent reported that work adversely affected their academic performance. A negative effect was also found between work and one-year persistence. Students who worked fewer hours were more likely than those who worked more hours to borrow to pay for their educations. The report's data tables are grouped into those on the essay's topic; supplemental data about work; enrollment and attendance; degree program, field of study, and grade point average; student characteristics; financial aid; and educational aspirations and community service.
