This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Professor's Story of Hybrid Corn Many students of the origin of crop plants have accepted the hypothesis of the Russian scientist, Vavilov, that the region of greatest diversity of types is usually the region of origin. Mangelsdorf and Reeves (1939, Mangelsdorf and Mangelsdorf and Smith have made extensive studies of the origin of corn, and their conclusions have been rather generally accepted, although others have different viewpoints regarding certain phases. The views of Mangelsdorf and co workers have been followed in this summary. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Molecular Plant Breeding

Download or read book Molecular Plant Breeding written by B.D. Singh and published by Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2017-10-01 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discipline of plant breeding has undergone transformation due to the assimilation of the rapid developments in molecular biology. The existing books on plant breeding deal mainly with the classical approaches, while specialized books on molecular approaches usually lack discussion of the classical methods. The book Molecular Plant Breeding attempts to present the complete picture of plant breeding ranging from the classical to the molecular approaches applied to crop improvement. The book is divided into four sections: Classical Plant Breeding, Transgenic technology, Molecular Markers, and Miscellaneous. The first section deals with the classical plant breeding and is divided into eight chapters. The second section has four chapters and describes transgenic technology. The third section discusses various aspects of molecular markers and is spread over three chapters. The final section has a single chapter dealing with variety release, seed multiplication and intellectual property rights. This book is designed primarily for graduate students, viz., B.Sc. agriculture and B.Sc. science students with botany as one of the subjects, who would get their first exposure to plant breeding. It would also be useful for the post-graduate students, especially in botany, and to teachers of the subject. The book is written in simple and easy to understand language. Illustrations and photographs have been provided wherever they were expected to facilitate comprehension of the subject under discussion.

Book Stories from the Round Barn

Download or read book Stories from the Round Barn written by Jacqueline Dougan Jackson and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using stories, anecdotes, history, and even veterinary science, Jackson braids together a series of dramatic fragments and episodes to vividly recreate life on the Dougan dairy farm. Founded in 1911 by W.J. Dougan near Beloit, Wisconsin, the Dougan farm, with its unusual round barn, is symbolic of a vanishing era. A renowned farm which was among the first to introduce many aspects of modern dairying to its operation, the Dougan farm eventually became a victim of agribusiness-style dairying and was closed. As Jackson recreates the texture and tone of life on the farm, larger themes emerge: the constant balancing between material life and spirit, the quest for humane values within a hard world of business and labor, the difficult lessons fundamental to childhood.

Book Funk Farms Birthplace of Commercial Hybrid Corn

Download or read book Funk Farms Birthplace of Commercial Hybrid Corn written by Funk Brothers Seed Company and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Funk Farms, Birthplace of Commercial Hybrid Corn: A History of Hybrid Corn At the opening of the twentieth century attention of corn breeders was focused on ear type. In this heyday of what he contemptuously called the ten pretty ears, Mr. Funk was not only the largest commercial seed corn grower but the lead ing critic of contemporary corn selection methods. Mr. Funk early recognized that appearance of an ear of corn was no guarantee of its seed value. Funk Brothers maintained a large exhibit at the St. Louis Louisiana Exposition in 1904 to demon strate that the popular show type of corn was not sound from the farmer's standpoint. With James Reid (developer of Reid's Yellow Dent) Mr. Funk set himself squarely against the then-popular rough starchy corn of late maturity, low vitality and inferior root development that was taking the blue ribbons at corn shows. The result was develop ment of Funk's Utility Type Corn smoother, medium dent, faster growth, firmer and more solid ears. Another decade was to pass before farmers generally, following the lead of experiment stations and farm bureaus, endorsed the utility ear. Meanwhile Gene Funk had gone on to newer fields. He abandoned ordinary ear selection entirely to develop on a commercial scale a new system of corn improvement. For, in disapproving the value of the Ten Pretty Ears, Mr. Funk repudiated the whole principle of selection simply from either the ear or plant. The trouble with seed selection, he found, was that while the ear itself came from a good plant and carried desirable characters it would not reproduce those characters unless fertilized by pollen from equally desirable plants. Download or read book Thinking about Evolution written by Rama S. Singh and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 2001, this is the second of two volumes published by Cambridge University Press in honour of Richard Lewontin. This second volume of essays honours the philosophical, historical and political dimensions of his work. It is fitting that the volume covers such a wide range of perspectives on modern biology, given the range of Lewontin's own contributions. He is not just a very successful practitioner of evolutionary genetics, but a rigorous critic of the practices of genetics and evolutionary biology and an articulate analyst of the social, political and economic contexts and consequences of genetic and evolutionary research. The volume begins with an essay by Lewontin on Natural History and Formalism in Evolutionary Genetics, and includes contributions by former students, post-docs, colleagues and collaborators, which cover issues ranging from the history and conceptual foundations of evolutionary biology and genetics, to the implications of human genetic diversity.
