This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Productive Management of Honeybee Colonies in the Northern States A location suitable for honey production must have one or more species of plants that yield plenty of nectar from which honey of good marketable quality is produced. It is hazardous, however, to pend entirely upon a single source of nectar, especially one having a short period of bloom. Weather conditions may prevent one source from yielding whereas other sources may produce a crop. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-01-30 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Honeybees and Honey Production in the United States The large number of bees indicated in the Southeastern States and particularly in the Appalachian section, while reflecting an undoubted fact, carries an impression stronger than the facts warrant, partially because the territory, is predominantly rural, but more because in that region the colonies are, to a greater extent than elsewhere, kept in small boxes, kegs, and similar receptacles which limit the size of the colony and cause heavy swarming. This latter fact tended to further exaggeration because at the time the census was taken swarming was well advanced in the South though hardly begun in the North. Download or read book Bee Keeping in North Carolina Vol 29 written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bee-Keeping in North Carolina, Vol. 29: January, 1908 There is no State organization in which our bee-keepers meet to exchange views; there is no system of inspection by which the apiaries may be brought to a higher standard; the bee-keeping magazines have but a limited circulation with us, and there is nowhere in the State a practical bee-keeper whose special duty it is to encourage or protect this industry. In order to see if we could reach any of the fundamental facts underlying this industry in the State, the writer - though not an actual beekeeper - began an inquiry into the industry in the summer of 1905, which has been continued (with interruptions) to the pres ent time. A carefully prepared sheet of questions was sent out, and all data received in reply have been carefully recorded. We have left out of account any who have less than ten colonies of bees, so that the data which we have is from actual commercial bee-keepers. We have on record replies from about 360 persons, representing a total of colonies, located in seventy-eight counties - an average of 134 colonies for each county heard from, or an average of nearly 108 colonies for each and every county in the entire State. We feel that with such an amount of data we are warranted in deducting some conclusions regarding the industry in the State as a whole. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Overwintering of Honey Bee Colonies Strong colonies will usually consume considerably more honey over winter than weak colonies. However, such strong colonies will usually replace most of the honey used during the winter with new honey from willow, dandelion, fruit bloom, and other early blooming sources, under the same conditions that under-developed colonies continue to lose weight or show little or no gain. The strong colony that has a large population of young bees by mid-april not only shows a smaller net loss of reserve stores at the beginning of the surplus flow in june than a subnormal colony, but also is stronger and more capable of produc ing a large surplus crop. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Productive Bee-Keeping: Modern Methods of Production and Marketing of Honey The author's earliest recollections are of days with his grandfather among the bees. One of the proudest days of his whole life was the first time he was permitted to cut a limb from an apple tree on which a swarm had clustered. With a lifetime of intimate association with the bees and a wide acquaintance among the bee-keepers of the nation, it may not be regarded as surprising that he should undertake to set down in this book the information gleaned from so many sources. In no other pursuit, perhaps, do the originators' names cling to the articles of equipment or methods of manipulation, as in bee-keeping. Most of the articles of equipment, as well as methods in common use, bear the name of the man with whom they originated - the Langstroth hive, Porter bee escape, Alexander feeder, Root smoker, Miller queen cage, and so on throughout the entire field of apiculture. So firmly established has this custom become, that a writer is in danger of being accused of plagiarism if he describes a method without the originator's name in connection. While the author has followed the usual custom, in the main, some methods have become so generally adopted that it hardly seems necessary to continue the practice. It is not with any intention of claiming as original any of these plans that the originator's name has occasionally been omitted, but rather because it does not seem needful with matters so fully credited already. Book The Use of Pollen Traps and Pollen Supplements in Developing Honeybee Colonies Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Use of Pollen Traps and Pollen Supplements in Developing Honeybee Colonies Classic Reprint written by C. W. Schaefer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-27 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Use of Pollen Traps and Pollen Supplements in Developing Honeybee Colonies The bees usually require several days to become accustomed to the trap. The pollen trapped during the first week will be below normal, thus making it desirable to leave the traps on the same hives rather than shifting them to different hives in the apiary. Colonies equipped with pollen traps will rear some brood but brood rearing will be curtailed. They may be given combs of pollen from other colonies to keep up their production, but good colonies at the beginning of the season will survive and may produce some honey. They can be united at the end of the season. Figure 6 shows a pollen tray, about two-thirds full of pollen, re moved from the trap. The pollen should be removed every 2 or 3 days under ordinary conditions and more often when the humidity is high or when the pollen is unusually moist. The pollen should be Spread out to a depth of to inch for air drying. To prevent molding, moist pollen can be dried rapidly in an improvised oven heated with electric light bulbs The oven may be constructed from a large fiber carton equipped with a rack to support five or six trays which consist of wooden rims covered with cheesecloth. The pollen should be Spread in a thin layer on the trays to allow the warm air which is generated at the bottom to pass through each tray and escape from an Opening in the top of the oven. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Advanced Bee-Culture, Its Methods and Management During the last four or five years I have been having quite a bit of experience in establishing out-apiaries, and in the production of honey upon a somewhat extensive scale. I have also visited a number of prominent bee-keepers, and photographed and described the methods whereby they made money. Of course, all of this has appeared in the Review and in Gleanings, but in a more or less scattered fashion; and, for a year or more, I have had in mind the gathering together of this matter, in consecutive order, in a new edition of Advanced Bee Culture. There are several reasons why I have been unable to accomplish this, chief of which has been the lack of health and strength to do the work. A few months ago a correspondence over the matter sprang up between Mr. E. R. Root and myself, with the result that, under my guidance and sanction, he revised the book, adding the new matter. All of the new matter is something that I have written, but the work of fitting in with the old, so as to make a smooth, continuous story, is that of my friend Root. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heat Production of Honeybees in Winter In considering the circumstances on this last day-of the experi ment with bees it is interesting to recall observations made in the study Of the effect Of ventilation on men, that the sensations produced by bad 7air are not experienced when the air is stirred. If this indicates an actual cliflerence in physiological conditions in the di mer ent circumstances, then it is not inconceivable that something analo gous to this was true Of the bees on this day. The stirring Of the air when the circulation was resumed may have served to remove some cause Of depression that was e mective when the circulation was stopped.' Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Bee Journal, 1884, Vol. 20: Devoted to Scientific Bee-Culture and Honey Production The Cure sung vespers while I rested myself, and then the old horse and chariot was brought out. Seated in it, I found the Cure wished to speed me on my return journey all he could, and at the same time show me a sight never to be forgotten. He drove me through a forest where the heather was in full bloom, and, in a secluded hidden spot, he showed me some half dozen lar e straw hives (certainly the largest I ave ever seen.) They were crammed full of bees and honey. Thousands of bees, idle for want of room, and around me such a mass of floral wealth as I think I have never seen equalled. Those only who have seen the heather in full bloom, in all its lory, can appreciate the reasons for t e annual migrations of bees and hives that take place in France and Germany. Book Southern Bee Culture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Southern Bee Culture Classic Reprint written by J. J. Wilder and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Southern Bee Culture I had to brace it with two sticks to keep it from tumbling over. I made some crude movable-frame hives (for I had not yet seen a patent movable; frame hive). With this outfit I began bee - keeping anew, studying them by handling them on their combs. My bee business began to grow; and after keeping bees thus for several years I heard of a bee-keeper who had bought some patent factory made hives. I paid him a visit at once, and I saw that the hives were just what I needed, so I bought a lot of them Next season I transferred my bees into them. From the old crude hives I transfered bees and what I had on hand extra, furnished me fuel during the summer and following winter. From the old decayed box hive my bee business has spread until bee keeping is my business or sole occupation. Besides establishing five apiaries of my own around in this section (as many bees as I can give proper atten tion to), I have furnished foundation stock from which many apiaries have been established in various sections of the South from the old mother hives. The ups and downs I had during this time, I have not space to describe in this small volume. If there is such a thing as a man being called to do certain work, I have been called to the field of bee culture, for I feel out of my calling at any thing else. Although I have mastered no little at eight other occupations, yet I feel more as if I am at my allotted work when I am among my bees than I do at any other of my trades. I have applied myself to bee-keeping in almost every conceivable man ner, keeping colonies of bees in glass hives in my bedroom and on my ver anda, keeping close and constant watch on them by day and by night. I have operated bees successfully and extensively for extracted chunk and comb honey m sections; I have traveled to and fro across the South, investi gating bee-keeping and the honey-plants in many sections; and if I did not know that there is a great future for the bee and honey industry here I would not attempt to write this book. While methods' of apiary work and bee-keeping differ m sections and locations, I hope to give you at least some practical thoughts along bee-keeping in your own location.
