Book Silvicultural Options for Young growth Douglas fir Forests

Download or read book Silvicultural Options for Young growth Douglas fir Forests written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the origin, design, establishment and measurement procedures and first results of a large long-term cooperative study comparing a number of widely different silvicultural regimes applied to young-growth Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) stands managed for multiple objectives. Regimes consist of (1) conventional clearcutting followed by intermediate thinning; (2) retention of reserve trees to create a two-aged stand; (3) small patch cuts dispersed within a thinned matrix, repeated at approximately 15-year intervals to create a mosaic of age classes; (4) group selection within a thinned matrix on an approximate 15-year cycle; (5) continued thinning on an extended rotation; and (6) an untreated control. Each of these regimes is on operationsize units (about 30 to 70 acres each). Output variables to be evaluated include conventional timber growth and yield statistics, harvest costs, sale layout and administration costs, aesthetic effects and public acceptance, soil disturbance, bird populations, and economic aspects. Descriptive statistics and some initial results are presented for the first replicate, established in 1997-98.

Book Production and Costs of Cut to length Thinning

Download or read book Production and Costs of Cut to length Thinning written by Loren D. Kellogg and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using multiple linear regression equations with indicator variables, we compared both harvesting and forwarding cycle times among treatments. We conducted detailed time studies on a harvester and a forwarder and used these data to develop two regression equations to predict delay-free harvest cycle times and delay-free forwarding cycle times. Delay information was gathered from both shift-level and detailed time studies. Total costs for each treatment were obtained by combining costs for harvesting, forwarding, and moving equipment in and out for the entire operation.

Book Guidelines for Precommercial Thinning of Douglas fir

Download or read book Guidelines for Precommercial Thinning of Douglas fir written by Donald L. Reukema and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Production of merchantable wood in even-aged Douglas-fir stands can be increased substantially by precommercial thinning. Guidelines for, and gains from, precommercial thinning both strongly depend on the size of trees wanted at the first commercial cut; the larger this size, (1) the fewer trees should be left after precommercial thinning, (2) the greater is the maximum age or tree size at which precommercial thinning is practical, and (3) the greater is the gain is usable yield from precommercial thinning. Also, generally, the longer the time required for a stand to reach commercial size without thinning, the greater the gains from precommercial thinning. These and other considerations are discussed, and procedures are recommended.

Book Technoeconomic Analysis of Conventional Logging Systems Operating from Stump to Landing

Download or read book Technoeconomic Analysis of Conventional Logging Systems Operating from Stump to Landing written by Raymond L. Sarles and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S2A technoeconomic analysis of timber harvesting systems was conducted to obtain key information for estimating long run supply trends of roundwood materials from eastern woodlands. Productivity and cost factors for six stump-to-landing systems were developed from operational data for 47 harvesting operations. Technical factors and the effects of financial considerations were also assessed. Combined with the productivity and cost factors, they provided better perception of the forces impacting long run roundwood supplies and logging contractors' business options.S3.
