Book excerpt: Excerpt from Production and Consumption of Mineral Fuels in Illinois, 1933-1964 Although different types of energy sources have been used to provide this total consumption, coal was the most important until,1952 Coal consumption rose to a peak in the 1920' s and then gradually declined. The new and increased uses and the substitution of petroleum products for other fuels had much to do with the relative decline in the importance of coal. In 1900, the national use of petroleum products was hardly significant, but since then their use has grown steadily and strongly. Today, petroleum products and natural gas each account for more energy than does coal. The importance of natural gas as a marketed product parallels the development of pipelines since World War II. In 1965, natural gas accounted for percent, crude petroleum percent, and coal percent of the energy used in the mineral fuels market. This book was released on 2018-04-27 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mineral Production in Illinois in 1963 The value of fuels produced in Illinois during 19 63 amounted to about percent of the value of all minerals. A decrease in the total value of these fuels coal and crude oil and associated products - as compared to the 19 62 value, amounted to about million dollars. The decline in the value of oil, with associated pro ducts, was equal to the entire decrease of 16 million dollars in the state's overall mineral value for 1963. The value of coal produced in 1963, on the other hand, showed an increase of almost 10 million dollars over the 19 62 coal value. Stone products produced in Illinois include crushed stone, cement, and lime and make up the second most important group of minerals produced in this state. As a group, these commodities contributed percent of the 19 63 total value. The tonnage and total value of crushed stone reported produced by commercial operators during 1963 showed somewhat of a decline from the amounts reported for 19 62. Shipments of Portland and masonry cements were up slightly in 1963 as compared to 1962. The value of lime produced in Illinois in 1963 registered a' percent in crease over the 1962 value. This book was released on 2017-12-13 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mineral Production in Illinois in 1954 Use of water in power production. Water in large quantities is needed as a cooling agent in the production of electrical power by steam-driven tur bines and electric generators. As about 400 to 700 tons of water is needed for each ton of coal used as fuel, steam power plants are often built near large bodies of cool water such as tidewater points, on the shores of the Great Lakes, or on large rivers. In the use of water for the production of power, a water head and a flow of water are required. The amount of power that can be obtained from an elevated body of water depends upon the height of the water above the water wheel and the volume of water flowing per measured period of time. The use fulness of water' flowing from a higher to a lower level in the production of power depends upon the regularity of flow. The amount of power that can be depended upon from day to day is related directly to the amount of water that can be expected to flow continuously. Modification or correction of seasonal variation in flow so as to increase the over-all year-round dependable power is one of the problems of water resource conservation in power supply. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illinois Mineral Industry in 1941 All of these increases in mineral production and processing during 1941 were due directly or indirectly to the tremendous program of military prepara tions carried on by the United States at a constantly increasing rate throughout the year. The second World War began to affect the mineral industry of Illinois during 1940 by the stimulation of demand from industries directly connected with filling orders for military equipment for this country and for foreign countries.
