Book Fresh Produce Retail Analysis of Vertical Coordination and Procurement Models in the Central California Lemon Supply Chain

Download or read book Fresh Produce Retail Analysis of Vertical Coordination and Procurement Models in the Central California Lemon Supply Chain written by Nathan Avedian and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fresh produce retail market is becoming increasingly competitive and the need to cut costs in order to invest in retail prices and innovations is critical. Seasonality of commodities cause market shoulders where retailers face increased prices and an insecure supply base with risk of being out of product. The implications of paying more than competitors or not having a product on the shelf can risk losing a customer's business to a competitor. This thesis is an analysis of procurement strategies by retailers in the fresh produce industry, in order to maximize efficiency by reducing cost of goods and securing supply. Specifically, this thesis will analyze different procurement strategies for procuring lemons out of the California San Joaquin Valley. The analysis will compare traditional market buys vs a vertically integrated procurement model in which the retailer procures farm land and controls the commodity from farm to store shelf. While the fresh produce industry has had an evolution over the past century, models of procurement are not following other industries in advancements such as innovations from technology, genetics and sustainability. By advancing procurement models the industry has the potential to not only benefit farmers and retailers but also deliver the customer a fresher product at a reduced price. The objective of this project is to investigate the ways to minimize commodity costs for the retailer and gain security of supply by analyzing procurement strategies for procuring lemons from California. This project is intended to support the fresh produce supply chain and specifically the retailer to optimize their procurement model. To determine an optimal strategy this project will compare and contrast traditional market buys vs a vertically integrated strategy. This is to determine if vertically integrating this commodity in a retailer supply chain would result in a net reduction of cost. Also, this project will determine if security of supply is gained through vertical integration vs traditional market buys. This project will consider variables such as market prices, supply/demand, sustainability and other industry implications. The data examined includes retail pricing and costs, farm production and cost, property market values, and other variables and inputs. The methods of analyzing the data include profitability scenarios throughout multiple procurement models for retailers to determine an optimal procurment model. As a result of the data and methods it is determined that there is an opportunity throughout the produce supply chain for retailers to shift away from traditional procurement models. This project's proposed land acquisition procurement model is an alternative strategy that can supplement traditional procurement model and would potentially reduce cost of goods and improve supply reliability. This vertically integrated procurement model creates supply chain efficiencies and reduces cost for the retailer along with increasing the retailer's security of supply in the fresh produce commodity market. This analysis should serve as a basis and guide for retailers to determine their company's optimal procurement model.

Book excerpt: The approach of this user-friendly text is to provide undergraduate students in a commercial or noncommercial foodservice curriculum with the understanding that procurement, which includes purchasing, receiving, storage, and inventory control, is the first step in preparing menu items that satisfy customers. With an emphasis placed on being updated and informed about products, students will learn how to make decisions about which products meet the quality standards required by the customer and at the same time find the lowest price for a product. Unlike any other text on the market, this book advocates that purchasing is not a cost center in the operation, as it was for many years, but that it contributes to the profit, and every dollar saved is a dollar profit.

Book Tackling the Farmer to Market Linkage Problem for Small Scale Farmers in Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Tackling the Farmer to Market Linkage Problem for Small Scale Farmers in Sub Saharan Africa written by Matthias Zoephel and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2011-04-29 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, grade: A, University of Applied Sciences Chur, language: English, abstract: African small-scale farmers are inadequately linked to markets to sell their harvested produce. On the one hand this is mainly because farmers are unable to produce according to what is demanded by buyers and on the other hand due to intermediary constraints. This current lack of adequate market linkages prevents farmers to sell their surplus production profitably. While this problem has been widely recognized by NGOs and governmental institutions, little improvements have been made so far. Literature fails to provide an overview of this problem that includes all variables affecting farmers and their linkage to markets. Zambia in particular has received minor consideration in the current literature concerning this problem. Therefore, two NGOs, namely Henwood Foundation and NAK Karitativ, have chosen this Master Thesis to create a farmer-to-market linkage model that incorporates all variables affecting farmers from being inadequately linked to markets while focus is placed on those variables that are amendable to influence by NGOs rather than external variables. The literature review in the following section two indicates how severe the market linkage problem actually is for small-scale farmers and what possibilities there are to tackle this dilemma. Based on the literature review, the research problem, its goal and its objectives as well as the data collection methods are specified in section three. Section four will provide an introduction to Zambia as well as to Western Province, a state in Zambia, and to Mongu District, a region in Western Province which received the geographical focus of this thesis. Building on this, the farmer-to-market linkage model will receive attention. Section five and six point out preconditions that determine agricultural output, which ultimately decides how well farmers can be linked to markets. Also, actual markets and their demand structure are stated in these sections. Based on sections five and six, the final farmer-to-market linkage model is developed and subsequently discussed in section seven. The thesis concludes with some incitation to solve this dilemma in section eight and a final conclusion outlining limitations of this study and suggestions for further research in section nine.
