It embodies the state-of-the-art donation - transplant process. It focuses on the major aspects, duties and professional responsibilities of the TPM: detection, identification and selection of donors, brain death diagnosis, donor management, organ viability, family approach for organ donation, donation after cardiac death, organ recovery organization & preservation techniques, organ sharing and allocation criteria, living donation, tissue donation, ethics and legislation, as well as the establishment and development of organ donation systems. The editors would like to acknowledge the support we have received from remarkable national and international authors with well-known and long-standing expertise in every specific area of the donation-transplant field, many of them as part of the permanent TPM faculty. We hope that this manual will become an optimal resource for all the professionals devoted to the human organs, tissues and cells procurement, and help them to strengthen their competences and motivation to save human lives and / or improve their quality.

Book Organ and Tissue Transplantation

Download or read book Organ and Tissue Transplantation written by David Price and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 605 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organ transplantation has been one of the miracles of modern-day medicine but, in addition to presenting enormous technical and clinical challenges, it throws up major ethical and legal issues principally from the perspective of the donor. Evolving capabilities in the spheres of both organ and tissue transplantation, coupled with rapidly-escalating demand, assert consistent and critical pressure on our ethical and legal principles and frameworks, including the expansion of the potential donor pool beyond the conventional categories of donor. This volume brings together seminal papers analyzing such matters in the context of an ever-increasingly important area of clinical practice.

Download or read book Contemporary Bioethics written by Mohammed Ali Al-Bar and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-05-27 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the common principles of morality and ethics derived from divinely endowed intuitive reason through the creation of al-fitr' a (nature) and human intellect (al-‘aql). Biomedical topics are presented and ethical issues related to topics such as genetic testing, assisted reproduction and organ transplantation are discussed. Whereas these natural sources are God’s special gifts to human beings, God’s revelation as given to the prophets is the supernatural source of divine guidance through which human communities have been guided at all times through history. The second part of the book concentrates on the objectives of Islamic religious practice – the maqa' sid – which include: Preservation of Faith, Preservation of Life, Preservation of Mind (intellect and reason), Preservation of Progeny (al-nasl) and Preservation of Property. Lastly, the third part of the book discusses selected topical issues, including abortion, assisted reproduction devices, genetics, organ transplantation, brain death and end-of-life aspects. For each topic, the current medical evidence is followed by a detailed discussion of the ethical issues involved.

Book Organ Donation

  • Author : Institute of Medicine
  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 2006-08-24
  • ISBN : 0309164648
  • Pages : 358 pages

Download or read book Organ Donation written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-08-24 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rates of organ donation lag far behind the increasing need. At the start of 2006, more than 90,000 people were waiting to receive a solid organ (kidney, liver, lung, pancreas, heart, or intestine). Organ Donation examines a wide range of proposals to increase organ donation, including policies that presume consent for donation as well as the use of financial incentives such as direct payments, coverage of funeral expenses, and charitable contributions. This book urges federal agencies, nonprofit groups, and others to boost opportunities for people to record their decisions to donate, strengthen efforts to educate the public about the benefits of organ donation, and continue to improve donation systems. Organ Donation also supports initiatives to increase donations from people whose deaths are the result of irreversible cardiac failure. This book emphasizes that all members of society have a stake in an adequate supply of organs for patients in need, because each individual is a potential recipient as well as a potential donor.

Book The Ethical and Legal Regulation of Human Tissue and Biobank Research in Europe

Download or read book The Ethical and Legal Regulation of Human Tissue and Biobank Research in Europe written by Nils Hoppe and published by Universitätsverlag Göttingen. This book was released on 2011 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Human tissue and biobank research is of increasing importance for understanding the causes of widespread diseases and developing effective therapies. However, while the success of biobank research depends on the availability of a large number of samples and the consolidation of collections across country borders is very desirable from the perspective of researchers, the legal and ethical requirements for the procurement, storage and use of human tissue samples are rather heterogeneous across different countries. Moreover, the lack of comprehensive supranational regulation on human tissue and biobanking can be seen as posing a serious threat to transnational biomedical research. Against this background, it was one of the aims of the EU-funded Tiss.EU project ('Evaluation of Legislation and Related Guidelines on the Procurement, Storage and Transfer of Human Tissues and Cells in the European Union--an Evidence-Based Impact Analysis') to analyse the ethical and legal regulation of human tissue and biobank research across the 27 European Member States plus Switzerland. The results of nine international workshops and three conferences are gathered in this volume. While the country reports evaluate the implementation of ethical and legal guidelines at a national level, point out their strengths and deficits, and, where required, create an evidence base for the revision of said legislation, the conference reports address more general ethical and legal issues in this field. The volume is completed by a final presentation of project's results"--Publisher's description

Book excerpt: This ninth volume in the series of King?s College Studies demonstrates the essential need for interplay between law, economics, political science and moral philosophy when formulating health policy. It addresses the issue of justice in the provision of health care by examining the problems faced in the American health care system, such as discrimination against ethnic and disabled groups, and the correlation between wealth and health. Subsequently it broadens the debate by turning to consider approaches in other health care systems such as those in the UK and Canada. This thought-provoking collection constitutes a useful and informative reference source that will be of particular interest to medical and health care practitioners across all specialties, philosophers, medical sociologists, health economists and lawyers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: nology in New Zealand. Angeles Tan Alora reports on the Code of Pharmaceutical Marketmg Practices developed by the Pharmaceutical and Health Care Association of the Philippines. Ruud ter Meulen and his colleagues provide detailed analysis of the Remmelink Commission's report on euthanasia in the Netherlands. Kazumasa Hoshino discusses the fmdings of the Special Committee on Gene Therapy in Japan. As such examples suggest, the activities of many governmental groups and professional advisory bodies, although varied, tend to converge upon a number of especially important issues. If one peruses the index of documents discussed in Volume Four, certain topics are more often the focus of legislation and official concern than others: withholding and withdrawing treatment, access to health care, consent to treatment and experimentation, and issues posed by HIV testing and AIDS. Such a common focus should not be exaggerated, for the discussion of topics is wide-ranging. But that commonality, when in evidence, is also not surprising. It suggests that key issues and concerns in bioethics may be widely shared among modern cultures and societies, for all the distinctiveness of a particular nation's or region's response to them. Issues of informed consent, after all, implicate more fundamental matters of respect for persons and the rights of individuals in the contexts of therapy and research. Issues of access to medical care concretize deeper questions about the nature and scope of a society's welfare obligations to its citizens.
