Book The Rand UCLA Appropriateness Method User s Manual

Download or read book The Rand UCLA Appropriateness Method User s Manual written by Kathryn Fitch and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2001 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Health systems should function in such a way that the amount of inappropriate care is minimized, while at the same time stinting as little as possible on appropriate and necessary care. The ability to determine and identify which care is overused and which is underused is essential to this functioning. To this end, the "RAND/UCLA Appropriateness Method" was developed in the 1980s. It has been further developed and refined in North America and, increasingly, in Europe. The rationale behind the method is that randomized clinical trials--the "gold standard" for evidence-based medicine--are generally either not available or cannot provide evidence at a level of detail sufficient to apply to the wide range of patients seen in everyday clinical practice. Although robust scientific evidence about the benefits of many procedures is lacking, physicians must nonetheless make decisions every day about when to use them. Consequently, a method was developed that combined the best available scientific evidence with the collective judgment of experts to yield a statement regarding the appropriateness of performing a procedure at the level of patient-specific symptoms, medical history, and test results. This manual presents step-by-step guidelines for conceptualising, designing, and carrying out a study of the appropriateness of medical or surgical procedures (for either diagnosis or treatment) using the RAND/UCLA Appropriateness Method. The manual distills the experience of many researchers in North America and Europe and presents current (as of the year 2000) thinking on the subject. Although the manual is self-contained and complete, the authors do not recommend that those unfamiliar with the RAND/UCLA Appropriateness Method independently conduct an appropriateness study; instead, they suggest "seeing one" before "doing one." To this end, contact information is provided to assist potential users of the method.

Book Staying Alive While Living the Life

Download or read book Staying Alive While Living the Life written by Sue-Ann MacDonald and published by Fernwood Publishing. This book was released on 2018-11-01T00:00:00Z with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Staying Alive While Living the Life, Sue-Ann MacDonald and Benjamin Roebuck unpack the realities of living on the streets from the perspective of homeless youth. While much is written about at-risk youth, most literature on youth homelessness reduces their lives to flattened images with little room for the diverse, complex and individual nature of their experiences. Challenging the dominant youth-at-risk conversation by putting forward a framework of survival and resilience, MacDonald and Roebuck illustrate the ways that young people who experience homelessness demonstrate tremendous resilience when facing adversity, social exclusion and various forms of oppression. Drawing on conversations with homeless youth, this book focuses both on the external constraints imposed on their lives as well as the ways young people understand their circumstances and their approaches to problem solving. The result is a nuanced analysis that puts human agency at its centre, allowing readers to explore the challenges young people face and the internal and external resources they draw upon when making decisions about their lives.

Book The Routledge International Handbook of Human Aggression

Download or read book The Routledge International Handbook of Human Aggression written by Jane L. Ireland and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-03 with total page 1000 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing upon international expertise, and including some of the most well-known academics and practitioners in the field, The Routledge International Handbook of Human Aggression is the first reference work to fully capture how our understanding of aggression has been refined and reconceptualised in recent years. Divided into five sections, the handbook covers some of the most interesting and timely topics within human aggression research, with analysis of both indirect and direct forms of aggression, and including chapters on sexual aggression, workplace bullying, animal abuse, gang violence and female aggression. It recognises that, in many cases, aggression is an adaptive choice rather than a moral choice. Providing practitioners and academics with an up-to-date resource that covers broad areas of interest and application, the book will be essential reading for students, researchers and practitioners associated with a range of social science disciplines, including psychology, criminology, social work and sociology, particularly those with an interest in developmental, organisational, forensic and criminal justice allied disciplines.
