Book excerpt: IJ:1 June of 1987 the Center for Applied Mathematics and Computer Science at San Jose State University received a bequest of over half a million dollars from the estate of Mrs. Marie Woodward. In the opening article of this collection of papers Jane Day, the founder of the Center, describes the background that led to this gift. In recognition of the bequest it was decided that a series of Woodward Conferences be established. The First Woodward Conference took place at San Jose State University on June 2-3 1988. The themes of the conference were the Theoretical, Computational and Practical Aspects of Wave Phenomena and these same themes have been used to divide the contributions to this volume. Part I is concerned with papers on theoretical aspects. This section includes papers on pseudo-differential operator techniques, inverse problems and the mathematical foundations of wave propagation in random media. Part II consists of papers that involve significant amounts of computation. Included are papers on the Fast Hartley Transform, computational algorithms for electromagnetic scattering problems, and nonlinear wave interaction problems in fluid mechanics. vi Part III contains papers with a genuine physics flavor. This final section illustrates the widespread importance of wave phenomena in physics. Among the phenomena considered are waves in the atmosphere, viscous fingering in liquid crystals, solitons and wave localization.

Book excerpt: It is propitious that the 25th year of publication of the International Journal of Fracture should coincide with the opportunity to support the recognition by the Society of Engineer ing Science of the 65th birthday of the Founding Editor-in-Chief, Professor M.L. Williams. At its 24th Annual Meeting at the University of Utah in September 1987, the Organizing Committee of the Society chose to honor Professor Williams by reserving several sessions for contributions from his colleagues working in the mechanics of fracture and associated mechanical property-structure relationships. We are therefore pleased to welcome Professor E.S. Folias, Professor of Mechanical Engineering, University of Utah, and a member of the Editorial Committee as the Guest Editor for the first three issues of Volume 39 of the Journal. We have also noted that the University of Utah was one of the three homes for the Journal, sandwiched between the original home at the California Institute of Technology in 1965 and its current location at the University of Pittsburgh. In observing these dual anniversaries, the publishers not only enthusiastically support the presentation of these special papers, but also wish to extend to Professor Williams our own best wishes on his personal anniversary, and to thank him and all the authors, reviewers, and particularly M.e. Williams, J.L. Swedlow and the Regional Editors for their respective contributions as we observe this 25th milestone.

The combined finite-discrete element method - a natural extension of both discrete and finite element methods - allows researchers to model problems involving the deformability of either one solid body, a large number of bodies, or a solid body which fragments (e.g. in rock blasting applications a more or less intact rock mass is transformed into a pile of solid rock fragments of different sizes, which interact with each other). Refined theories, with these effects taken into account, have been pioneered by Bresse, Lord Rayleigh, Timoshenko, Eric Reissner, Mindlin and others. These refined theories have been fruitfully applied in recent decades in both theoretical and prac tical solid mechanics problems. The European Mechanics Committee approved holding EURO~illCH Colloquium 219 on "Refined Dynamical Theories of Beams, Plates and Shells and Their Applications" for reviewing the recent devel opments, providing guidelines for future investigations and presenting a forum for current work of younger researchers. The Colloquium was held during September 23 - 26, 1986, at the Uni versitat-Gesamthochschule Kassel, in the city of Kassel, Federal Republic of Germany. 45 Representatives of academia and industry, from nine European countries, as well as from Israel, USA and India participated in this Colloquium. IV 36 lectures were presented during the five sessions: Session A: Theory of Vibrations of Plates and Shells Session B: Various Approaches for Dynamical Problems of Beams Session C: Random Vibrations and Dynamic Stability Session D: Vibrations of Composite Structures Session E: Special Dynamical Problems of Beams, Plates and Shells The papers in this volums were divided into two parts: papers of invited keynote lectures and those of the invited contributed lectures.
