When the scene is complex, or when high-quality images or high frame rates are required, the rendering process becomes computationally demanding. To provide the necessary levels of performance, parallel computing techniques must be brought to bear. Although parallelism has been exploited in computer graphics since the early days of the field, its initial use was primarily in specialized applications. The VLSI revolution of the late 1970's and the advent of scalable parallel computers during the late 1980's changed this situation. Today, parallel hardware is routinely used in graphics workstations, and numerous software-based rendering systems have been developed for general-purpose parallel architectures. This article provides a broad introduction to the subject of parallel rendering, encompassing both hardware and software systems. The focus is on the underlying concepts and the issues which arise in the design of parallel rendering algorithms and systems. We examine the different types of parallelism and how they can be applied in rendering applications. Concepts from parallel computing, such as data decomposition, task granularity, scalability, and load balancing, are considered in relation to the rendering problem. We also explore concepts from computer graphics, such as coherence and projection, which have a significant impact on the structure of parallel rendering algorithms. Our survey covers a number of practical considerations as well, including the choice of architectural platform, communication and memory requirements, and the problem of image assembly and display. We illustrate the discussion with numerous examples from the parallel rendering literature, representing most of the principal rendering methods currently used in computer graphics."

Over the past 10 years, the Workshop has become the premier forum dedicated to research in rendering. Much of the work in rendering now appearing in other conferences and journals builds on ideas originally presented at the Workshop. This year we received a total of 84 submissions. Bachpaper was carefully reviewed by two of the 25 international programme committee members, as weil as external reviewers, selected by the co-chairs from a pool of 121 individuals (The programme committee and external reviewers are listed following the contents pages). In this review process, all submissions and reviews were handled electronically, with the exception of videos submitted with a few of the papers (however, some mpeg movies were also sent electronically). The overall quality of the submissions was exceptionally high. Space and time constraints forced the committee to make some difficult decisions. In the end, 33 papers were accepted, and they appear here. Almost all papers are accompanied by color images, which appear at the end of the book. The papers treat the following varied topics: radiosity, ray tracing, methods for global illumination, visibility, reftectance, filtering, perception, hardware assisted methods, real time rendering, modeling for effi cient rendering and new image representations.
