Book Multimodality and Active Listenership

Download or read book Multimodality and Active Listenership written by Dawn Knight and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-10-13 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current corpora are invaluable resources for generating accurate and objective analyses of patterns of language use. However, spoken corpora are effectively mono-modal, presenting data in the same physical medium – text. The reality of a discourse situation is lost in its representation as text. Using multimodal data sets when conducting corpus-based pragmatic analyses is one solution. This book looks at multimodal corpora in some depth, using backchanneling as the conversational feature to be analysed. It provides a bottom-up investigation of the issues and challenges faced at every stage of multimodal corpus construction and analysis, as well as providing an in-depth linguistic analysis of a cross section of multimodal corpus data. The collaborative and co-operative nature of backchannels is highlighted in this book and an adapted pragmatic-functional linguistic coding matrix for the characterisation of backchanneling phenomena is presented. Dawn Knight also looks at possible directions in the construction and use of multimodal corpus linguistics.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Developmental Linguistics

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Developmental Linguistics written by Jeffrey Lidz and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 1041 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this handbook, renowned scholars from a range of backgrounds provide a state of the art review of key developmental findings in language acquisition. The book places language acquisition phenomena in a richly linguistic and comparative context, highlighting the link between linguistic theory, language development, and theories of learning. The book is divided into six parts. Parts I and II examine the acquisition of phonology and morphology respectively, with chapters covering topics such as phonotactics and syllable structure, prosodic phenomena, compound word formation, and processing continuous speech. Part III moves on to the acquisition of syntax, including argument structure, questions, mood alternations, and possessives. In Part IV, chapters consider semantic aspects of language acquisition, including the expression of genericity, quantification, and scalar implicature. Finally, Parts V and VI look at theories of learning and aspects of atypical language development respectively.

Book Perspectives on Causation

Download or read book Perspectives on Causation written by Elitzur A. Bar-Asher Siegal and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-07-27 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores relationships and maps out intersections between discussions on causation in three scientific disciplines: linguistics, philosophy, and psychology. The book is organized in five thematic parts, investigating connections between philosophical and linguistic studies of causation; presenting novel methodologies for studying the representation of causation; tackling central issues in syntactic and semantic representation of causal relations; and introducing recent advances in philosophical thinking on causation. Beyond its thematic organization, readers will find several recurring topics throughout this book, such as the attempt to reduce causality to other non-causal terms; causal pluralism vs. one all-encompassing account for causation; causal relations pertaining to the mental as opposed to the physical realm, and more. This collection also lays the foundation for questioning whether it is possible to evaluate available philosophical approaches to causation against the variety of linguistic phenomena ranging across diverse lexical and grammatical items, such as bound morphemes, prepositions, connectives, and verbs. Above all, it lays the groundwork for considering whether the fruits of the psychological-cognitive study of the perception of causal relations may contribute to linguistic and philosophical studies, and whether insights from linguistics can benefit the other two disciplines.

Book The Acquisition of Finiteness

Download or read book The Acquisition of Finiteness written by Elma Blom and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2008-12-10 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides a theoretical and empirical evaluation of a field that has been the focus of generative theories on language acquisition: the acquisition of finiteness and related properties such as root infinitives, verb movement and null subjects. It contains a critical empirical assessment of the various hypotheses, lists the implications for linguistic theory and provides alternative analyses. Issues covered are: (i) the semantics of children’s root infinitives (tense, modality and aspect), (ii) the relation between lexical, morphological and syntactic development in the domain of finiteness, (iii) the role of the input, and (iv) the interference of cognitive development. Typological focus is on Germanic languages.

Book Topics in French Syntax

Download or read book Topics in French Syntax written by Geraldine Legendre and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-11-10 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main goal of this study, first published in 1994, is to present a substantial part of the grammar of French. This goal is achieved by bringing together two aspects of syntactic investigation. First, the study focuses on a vast range of French clausal phenomena, including Object Raising constructions, Causative constructions of various types, Impersonal constructions, amongst many others. Second, the investigation is conducted within the framework of Relational Grammar. This title will be of interest to students of language and linguistics.

Book Proceedings of the First International Conference on Intelligent Human Computer Interaction

Download or read book Proceedings of the First International Conference on Intelligent Human Computer Interaction written by U. S. Tiwary and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dear Reader! Welcome to the proceedings of the First International Conference on Intelligent Human Computer Interaction (IHCI 2009) organized by the Indian Institute of Information Technology Allahabad. This is the first International Conference focused on Human Computer Interaction being organized in India. There is an increased interest in the human factors issues of computer use with a number of systems. The conference aims to provide an excellent opportunity for the dissemination of interesting new research, discussion about them and the generation of new ideas in these areas. We planned to organize the conference around the following five tracks: Signal and Vision Processing Language Processing Cognitive modeling Sensors and Embedded systems for HCI Graphics, Animation and Gaming Graphics, Animation and Gaming, Signal and Vision Processing, Language Processing and Cognitive modeling attracted due attention in the conference program. Very few papers were submitted in Sensors and Embedded systems and Graphics and Animation. Language is the primary means of communication between humans though usually neglected from HCI perspective. It will be better if human-computer interaction can be done in the same model as human-human communication. This was the main motivation behind including Language Processing as a separate track in the conference. However, some of the papers could not really achieve the application aspect from the HCI perspective. We will improve on this point in the next conference.
