Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Pennsylvania Pharmaceutical Association at Its Fourth Annual Meeting, Held in Williamsport, June 14 and 15, 1881: With the Constitution, by-Laws, Code of Ethics, and Roll of Members Gentlemen: According to the notices sent out by the Secretary, the hour has ar rived when we shall commence the business of the first session of the fourth annual meeting of the Pennsylvania Pharmaceutical Association. I am pleased, indeed, to find so many members representing so many different counties, and coming from dif ferent parts of the State, as are present to-day. There will be others who have not arrived, and I believe we are going to have by far the most interesting meeting of the Association that we have ever had. I am glad, too, that the ladies have thought well to be present on this occasion, and I am glad that the members have not neglected to bring their wives along, as it aids to make the meeting more interesting and pleasant. I would, therefore, as President of the Association, declare the meeting opened, and we will proceed at once to transact the business which may come before the As sociation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the American Pharmaceutical Association: At the Twenty-Fourth Annual Meeting Held in Philadelphia, Pa., September, 1876, Also the Constitution, by-Laws, and Roll of Members There seems to be no doubt that this papyrus is one of the forty two ao-called Hermetic books of the ancient Egyptians, thirty-six of which contained their philosophical works, and six the various branches of medical art, namely, treatises on surgery, anatomy, therapeutics, diseases in general, Ophthalmology, and gynaecology; the Papyrus Ebers being the treatise on therapeutics. The work betrays an astonishing knowledge of a great variety of remedies, and shows that in the sixteenth century before our era there were learned men in Egypt, who could make intelligent observations of disease, combine complicated recipes, and use them with judgment. To the student of the history of pharmacy the work is invaluable. In connection with this subject mention must be made of a recent and very valuable contribution by Prof. Fliickiger, entitled Docu mente zur Geschichte der Pharmacie, and consisting of a compila tion of over one hundred drug and medicine lists and tariffs of German towns, ranging from the year 1558 down to the middle of the last century, the consultation of which, as in the case of the papyrus alluded to, must prove of great value to any author en ga'ged in the history of pharmacy. Then we had a sparse treasury. Now it is no longer necessary that services requiring so much labor and time, should not be properly compensated. I therefore suggest that the Association provide for the payment of a regular salary to the Secretary. Our honored Treasurer, who has proved an excellent custodian of the finances will present his report, showing a healthy condition of the treasury, with a balance in his hands of $465 09. The Executive Committee, during the interim, have elected nine applicants, (with the approval of the President, ) which gives an additional representation in three counties of our State. Their report will give the number on the roll of membership, a statement of their transactions, including the publishing of the proceedings, with a preface, to which I call your attention. The special committees on Legislation and Trade Interests, Adulterations and Sophistications, Certificate of Membership, Queries, Revision Of the Pharmacopoeia: and Delegates to the American Pharmaceutical Association, will all present reports of their transactions. The certificate Of membership has been issued to the members applying for them, and now adorns their stores in the different sections of our State.
