Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Ohio State Christian Anti-Slavery Convention, Held at Columbus, August 10 and 11, 1859 Pursuant to previous notice, a Christian Anti-Slavery Convention met at teno clocit in the morning on Wednesday, August 10, 1859, at the Congregational Church in the city of Columbus, Ohio. A preliminary organiz ition was effected by electing A. A. (iL TORie, Esq. of Putnam, Chairman, and H.B. Spelman, of Cleveland, Secretary. The call under which the Convention assembled was read as follows: State Christian Anti-Slavery Convention, To be held in Columbus, 0., Wednesday and Thursday, Aug.10 and 11, 1?59.To Anti-Slaveuy Christians Thuougiiout the State: The present aspects of the great controversy between Freedom and Slavery in our country, earnestly cull for more thorough aggression and systematic action on our part. The African Slave Trade which by the law is piracy is revived, and there is not sufficient active moral power in the nation to extinguish it. Southern Churches have generally apostatized to the open justification of Slavery, and Northern Chrisiiaus are sadly rcuaiss in duty wi hrespect to opposing it. Southern States are expelling or enslaving their free colored population, and N: -rthern States allow their colored citizens to ba kidnapped under the provisions of the Fugitive Act. The Fugitive Act is pronounced Constitutional by the National Courts. S.ime of our mos, virtuous and respected citizen.s are imprisoned bjcause they could not quietly stand and see a neighbor kidnapped and dragged into hopeless bondage, and our State Supreme Court, in deference tu precedent, has refused to pronounce the law unconstitutional. According to the decision of the Supreme Court of the United States, Slavery is extended to a!! our territories by virtue of the Cotistituiion, and neither Congress nor the people has power to prohibit it. And while all this is passing, the party in power is straining its energies to acquire new territory for the expansion and development of the great evil. To meet the dtmands and agressions of the Slaveholding power, the Freedom loving element of the nation has no great, Christian, earnest, systematic agency. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the New York Anti-Slavery Convention: Held at Utica, October 21, and New York Anti-Slavery State Society, Held at Peterboro', October 22, 1835 Mr. S. Said this was the first Convention which had ever assem-t bled in the United States, under such a remarkable state of facts as those which seem to distinguish this from all public bodies of men who have ever met in this land before. For the last forty days, at least three hundred public presses have poured a continued shower of abuse upon the individuals who called this Convention; charac terized by a spirit of vengeance and violence, knowing and propo sing nothing but the bitterness of invective, and the cruelty of bloody persecution. He said, our enemies have sent their slanders against us, whispering across the diameter of the globe, telling the haughty and sneering minions of absolutism on the other side of the world, that the sons of the Pilgrims had proved recreant to their lofty line age, unfaithful to their high destiny, untrue to the last hopes of man. Said Mr. S., is it true that the philanthropy which warms our hearts into action for the suffering slave, can exile our patriotism, and pre pare our souls for the most heaven daring guilt? Is it true because we feel for bleeding humanity, that it makes us cruel? Can pity produce it? Can love beget hate? Can an affectionate respect and kind feeling for all the human beings whose lot Providence has cast in these twenty-four States, be evidence that we wish to cut the throats of two and a half millions of our white neighbors, friends, brethren and countrymen? Does a generous regard for the injured slave, imply hatred for the master? If so, the converse of the proposition must be true; that to love the master implies hatred to the slave. Neither proposition is true, yet the enemies of this Convention have acted towards us as though these propositions had the assurance of certainty, as much as we have on a clear day at 12 o'clock at noon, that the sun shines on the world.
