Book excerpt: This report summarizes the discussions that took place during marine mammal peer review meetings. It reviews the status of the bowhead whale (Balaena mysticetus) in the eastern Canadian Arctic, using data from satellite-linked telemetry and aerial surveys. It examines abundance indices and harvest statistics for the eastern Hudson Bay beluga, and data from aerial surveys for the western Hudson Bay beluga. Finally, it reviews the status of the harp seal (Phoca groenlandicus) in Atlantic Canada, using by-catch estimates, estimates of human-induced mortality, and pup production; examines pup production, abundance, and harvesting data for the grey seal (Halichoerus grypus); and discusses prey and population dynamics among killer whales (Orcinus orca) of British Columbia.

The purpose of the meeting was to review research documents and provide science advice on Northwest Atlantic grey seals (Halichoerus grypus), Steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus), eastern Arctic bowhead whales (Balaena mysticetus) and the recovery potential for West Coast transient killer whales (Orcinus orca) in Pacific Region. In addition, advice was provides on levels of total allowable harvest for marine mammal stocks in the Nunavut settlement area. This proceedings report summarizes the relevant discussions and presents the key conclusions reached at the peer review meeting.
