This book was released on 2019-08-30 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do we prepare for and manage the challenges and the transformations that are increasingly confronting cities? Solutions are necessary for the impacts expected from the global population movement toward urban centres; the evolution of technologies and its influence on the economy; the evolving socio-cultural fabric of our cities and what it means for citizen engagement and happiness; and for the increasing need to protect and better manage the environment. The series of essays presented here will help governments, organizations, and concerned citizens think differently about ways we can improve the places we call home. It will stimulate local stakeholders to move away from silo-thinking and work collaboratively toward innovative solutions to make cities more liveable and sustainable. The volume brings together international experts on development, innovation, education, health, digitalization, and planning to provide stimulating new ideas and successful examples of tools and systems being used worldwide to improve the future of cities.

Book Reshaping Urban Conservation

Download or read book Reshaping Urban Conservation written by Ana Pereira Roders and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-07 with total page 591 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on the implementation of the 2011 UNESCO Recommendation on the Historic Urban Landscape (HUL approach), designed to foster the integration of heritage management in regional and urban planning and management, and strengthen the role of heritage in sustainable urban development.Earlier publications and research looked at the underlying theory of why the HUL approach was needed and how this theory was developed and elaborated by UNESCO. A comprehensive analysis was carried out in consultation with a multitude of actors in the twenty-first-century urban scene and with disciplinary approaches that are available to heritage managers and practitioners to implement the HUL approach. This volume aims to be empirical, describing, analyzing, and comparing 28 cities taken as case studies to implement the HUL approach. From those cases, many lessons can be learned and much guidance shared on best practices concerning what can be done to make the HUL approach work.Whereas the previous studies served to illustrate issues and challenges, in this volume the studies point to innovations in regional and urban planning and management that can allow cities to avoid major conflicts and to further develop in competitiveness. These accomplishments have been possible by building partnerships, devising financial strategies, and using heritage as a key resource in sustainable urban development, to name but a few effective strategies. For these reasons, this volume is primarily pragmatic, linked to the daily work and challenges of practitioners and administrators, using specific cases to assess what was and is good about current practices and what can be improved, in accordance with the HUL approach and aims.

Book excerpt: The 18th volume in the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna series, Spaces of Commoning raises unsettling questions about research ethos, accountability, and the entanglement of power and knowledge embedded in Western sciences, arts and architecture. The well-designed, illustrated softcover book gathers over 20 case studies by an international collective of artists, architects and social theorists to investigate the question of commoning practices in Austria, Ethiopia, Greece and across the world. Organized into six sectionsNo Beginnings, Call to Order, Wage Labor and Reproductive Labor, Noise as Border, Bodies and Other Ghosts and Commoning as Horizon the essays explore how social movements are often caught between competing agendas and the gap between agendas and everyday life. It is the sites of these struggles that constitute the Spaces of Commoning. With contributions by artists Moira Hill and CASCO Office, scholar Lisa Lowe, spatial and urban theorists Stavros Stavrides and Stefan Grub, sociologist and art historian Pelin Tan, and architect Julia Wieger, among others.

The phenomenon of the dehumanization process in the industrial era that pushed people to be part of abstract societies tends to ignore humanity. The education process as a humanitarian system is increasingly marginalized, especially during discussions about the industrial revolution 4.0 and Society 5.0. The conference placed six sub-themes for speakers and participants to share ideas, namely: Social Sciences and Laws, History and Cultural Studies, Interdisciplinary Studies, Morals and Humanities, Policy, Politics, and Communication, Education. The committee has received 195 abstracts from prospective speakers. However, there are only 80 abstracts that are eligible to be presented at this conference.

This book was released on 2014-03-28 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive, critical overview of the developments in architecture from 1960 to 2010. The first section provides a presentation of major movements in architecture after 1960, and the second, a geographic survey that covers a wide range of territories around the world. This book not only reflects the different perspectives of its various authors, but also charts a middle course between the 'aesthetic' histories that examine architecture solely in terms of its formal aspects, and the more 'ideological' histories that subject it to a critique that often skirts the discussion of its formal aspects.
