Download or read book The Vitreous State written by Ivan S. Gutzow and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-12 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book summarizes the experimental evidence and modern classical and theoretical approaches in understanding the vitreous state, from structural problems, over equilibrium and non-equilibrium thermodynamics, to statistical physics. Glasses, and especially silicate glasses, are only the best known representatives of this particular physical state of matter. Other typical representatives include organic polymer glasses, and many other easily vitrifying organic and inorganic substances, technically important materials, amidst them vitreous water and vitrified aqueous solutions, and also many metallic alloy systems. Some of these systems only form glasses under particular conditions, e.g. through ultra-rapid cooling. This book describes the properties and the formation of both every-day technical glasses and especially of such more exotic forms of vitreous matter. It is a unique source of knowledge and new ideas for materials scientists, engineers and researchers working on condensed matter. The new edition emphasizes latest experimental findings and modern theories, explaining the kinetics of glass formation, the relaxation and stabilization of glasses and their crystallization in terms of new models, derived from the framework of the thermodynamics of irreversible processes. It shows how the properties of common technical glasses, window glass, or the vitreous ice kernel of comets can be used to develop a new understanding of the existence of matter in various, unusual forms. The described theories can even find application for the description of lasers and interesting unusual processes in the universe.

Book excerpt: Examines the latest processing and fabrication methods There is increasing interest in the application of advanced ceramic materials in diverse areas such as transportation, energy, environmental protection and remediation, communications, health, and aerospace. This book guides readers through a broad selection of key processing techniques for ceramics and their composites, enabling them to manufacture ceramic products and components with the properties needed for various industrial applications. With chapters contributed by internationally recognized experts in the field of ceramics, the book includes traditional fabrication routes as well as new and emerging approaches in order to meet the increasing demand for more reliable ceramic materials. Ceramics and Composites Processing Methods is divided into three sections: * Densification, covering the fundamentals and practice of sintering, pulsed electric current sintering, and viscous phase silicate processing * Chemical Methods, examining colloidal methods, sol-gel, gel casting, polymer processing, chemical vapor deposition, chemical vapor infiltration, reactive melt infiltration, and combustion synthesis * Physical Methods, including directional solidification, solid free-form fabrication, microwave processing, electrophoretic deposition, and plasma spraying Each chapter focuses on a particular processing method or approach. Collectively, these chapters offer readers comprehensive, state-of-the-science information on the many approaches, techniques, and methods for the processing and fabrication of advanced ceramics and ceramic composites. With its coverage of the latest processing methods, Ceramics and Composites Processing Methods is recommended for researchers and students in ceramics, materials science, structural materials, biomedical engineering, and nanotechnology.

Book Bioceramics

Download or read book Bioceramics written by W. Bonfield and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-17 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bioceramics is a collection of papers that deals in bioactive ceramics, glasses, and composites, focusing on the optimization of the implant-tissue interface. One paper discusses the osteogenic response of rat bone marrow cells in porous alumina, in hydroxyapatite, and in Kiel bone. Marrow cells loaded alumina and HA ceramics show new bone formation; Kiel bone use does not point to any consistent osteogenesis. Another paper presents the potential of an injectable form of Bioglass to treat urinary incontinence. When injected, it remains at the injection site by bonding to soft tissues without degrading, migrating, or producing an inflammatory reaction. Another paper presents an in vitro method that has shown osteoclast-like cells can resorb artificial calcium phosphate substrata in vitro. The differences in bone bonding mechanisms between surface active ceramics and resorbable ceramics show some chemical bonding and direct contact with the bone. The book also presents some clinical uses of bioactive ceramics such as the successful artificial root therapeutics involving 219 artificial roots implanted in 63 patients. This book can prove valuable to bio-chemists, cellular biologists, micro-biologists, developmental biologists, and scientists involved in biomaterials research.

Book Thin Film Micro Optics

Download or read book Thin Film Micro Optics written by Ruediger Grunwald and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2007-02-19 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Thin-film microoptics" stands for novel types of microoptical components and systems which combine the well-known features of miniaturized optical elements with the specific advantages of thin optical layers. This approach enables for innovative solutions in shaping light fields in spatial, temporal and spectral domain. Low-dispersion and small-angle systems for tailoring and diagnosing laser pulses under extreme conditions as well as VUV-capable microoptics can be realized. Continuous-relief microstructures of refractive, reflective and hybrid characteristics are obtained by vapor deposition technologies with shadow masks in rotating systems. The book gives a comprehensive overview on fundamental laws of microoptics, types of thin-film microoptical components, methods and constraints of their design, fabrication and characterization, structure transfer into substrates, optical functions and applications. Recent theoretical and experimental results of basic and applied research are addressed. Particular emphasis will be laid on the generation of localized, nondiffracting few-cycle wavepackets of extended depth of focus and high tolerance against distortions. It is shown that the spectral interference of ultrabroadband conical beams results in spatio-temporal structures of characteristic X-shape, so-called X-waves, which are interesting for robust optical communication. New prospects are opened by exploiting small conical angles from nanolayer microoptics and self-apodized truncation of Bessel beams leading to the formation of single-maximum nondiffracting beams or "needle beams". Thin-film microoptical beam shapers have an enormous potential for future applications like the two-dimensional ultrafast optical processing, multichannel laser-matter interaction, nonlinear spectroscopy or advanced measuring techniques.- Introduces a new and promising branch of microoptics - Gives a compact overview on the types, properties and applications of the most important microoptical components containing valuable data and facts- Helps to understand the basic optical laws - Reports on the historical development line of thin-film microoptics - Provides brand new results of research and development in the field of ultrashort-pulse laser beam shaping and diagnostics- Discusses the future trends and first approaches of next generation microoptics- Contains a carefully assorted glossary of the most important technical terms
