Book Nanostructured Materials

Download or read book Nanostructured Materials written by Gan-Moog Chow and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A critical, up to date, tutorial review and discussion of the science and technology of nanostructured metallic and ceramic materials. The focus is on the synthesis and processing of nanoparticles, the assembly and stability of nanostructures, characterization and properties, and applications. There is a growing interest in the processing of nanoparticles into consolidated bulk materials and coatings. The metastability of nanoparticles may lead to undesirable grain growth during thermally assisted consolidation or other processing routes, and the retention of nanostructures in a processed part or component continues to attract a great deal of attention. Current activity is concentrating on the deposition of nanostructured coatings using established thermal spray technology and wet chemistry methods. Naturally existing or artificially synthesized templates with unique structures and morphologies have been used to fabricate nanostructured materials with the same structural and morphological characteristics as the templates. Recent advances in characterization techniques have provided information on the structure, the surface and bulk chemistry of nanoparticles, and the structures and chemistry of exposed and buried surfaces of coatings. Contributors are drawn from Canada, France, UK, USA, Belarus, Russia and Ukraine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This issue of Zeitschrift fUr Physik D contains papers which were presented at the 5th International Symposium on Small Particles and Inorganic Clusters. ISSPIC5 was held at the University of Konstanz, Germany, from September 10 to 14, 1990. There were 33 invited talks, and 295 papers were contributed. 14 particularly interesting papers had been selected by the International Advisory Board: they were presented during one of the regular sessions. In addition, two last-minute contributions, describing break throughs in the synthesis and characterization of size-selected fullerene carbon clusters, were communicated orally. The other contributions were presented during two poster sessions, comprising nearly twice as many papers as during the previous symposium in Aix-en-Provence, in 1988. Approximately 250 manuscripts were received, and all were refereed during the sympo sium. Several of them had to be revised, but only a small number were rejected. The contributions in this volume are grouped according to the topic, roughly following the scheme adopted during the conference.

Download or read book Applied Solid State Physics written by W. Low and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of a set of lectures sponsored by the Bathsheva de Rothschild Seminars. It deals with different aspects of applied physics which are an outgrowth of fundamental research. The courses were given by experts engaged in their respective fields. These review articles are intended to fill a gap between the many research papers that are appearing today in pure science on one hand, and in applied science on the other hand. It is a bridge between these two. It aims at the specialist in applied physics, chemistry and engineering, working in these specialized fields, as well as at the graduate student, interested in solid solid state physics, chemistry and electrical engineering. While this book contains a range of different topics, there is an under lying logic in the choice of the subject material. The first three articles, by Drs. Giordmaine, Friesem and Porto, deal with modern applied optics, which arise to a large extent from the availability of coherent and powerful laser sources. Two articles deal with materials, in particular that of Dr. Chalmers on the theory and principle of solidification and that of Dr. Laudise on the techniques of crystal growth. The last three articles, by Drs. Matthias, Doyle and Prince, are concerned with the use of materials in fields of superconductivity, computer storage and semi conductor photovoltaic effects. Dr. Rose gives a definitive review on human and electronic vision, an out-growth of life-long activity in this field.

Book Quantum Transport in Semiconductors

Download or read book Quantum Transport in Semiconductors written by David K. Ferry and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The majority of the chapters in this volume represent a series of lectures. that were given at a workshop on quantum transport in ultrasmall electron devices, held at San Miniato, Italy, in March 1987. These have, of course, been extended and updated during the period that has elapsed since the workshop was held, and have been supplemented with additional chapters devoted to the tunneling process in semiconductor quantum-well structures. The aim of this work is to review and present the current understanding in nonequilibrium quantum transport appropriate to semiconductors. Gen erally, the field of interest can be categorized as that appropriate to inhomogeneous transport in strong applied fields. These fields are most likely to be strongly varying in both space and time. Most of the literature on quantum transport in semiconductors (or in metallic systems, for that matter) is restricted to the equilibrium approach, in which spectral densities are maintained as semiclassical energy conserving delta functions, or perhaps incorporating some form of collision broadening through a Lorentzian shape, and the distribution functions are kept in the equilibrium Fermi-Dirac form. The most familiar field of nonequilibrium transport, at least for the semiconductor world, is that of hot carriers in semiconductors.

Book Nanotechnology in Construction

Download or read book Nanotechnology in Construction written by Peter J M Bartos and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2007-10-31 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of nanotechnology related research and development has become recognised worldwide. Substantial public and private investment is now being ploughed into research and development in a number of industrial sectors, where nanotechnology has become established and has led to new commercial products. The construction industry, having major economic significance with nano-scale research and development which is only emerging, offers a wide scope for exploitation of nanotechnology. With international contributions from experts in the field, Nanotechnology in Construction amalgamates previously fragmented research and emerging trends. It reflects the inherent multi-disciplinary nature of nano-scale research in construction and contributions cover a wide spectrum, from highly scientific investigations to futuristic applications. The book is organised into four broad sections, the first reviews and analyses the prospects of exploitation of nanotechnology in construction, the second discusses novel tools and their capabilities, the final two sections show existing significant products where nanotechnology has been already been exploited or where product development is under-way. Nanotechnology in Construction will appeal to researchers already working in this field as well as those wishing to enter it. It will also inform governmental and other funding agencies of the most promising future directions and their related timescales. Practical applications are considered and explanations of the underlying basics are given, raising awareness and understanding of what nanotechnology can offer to construction professionals in general.

Book 4 Architects 1950 1980

Download or read book 4 Architects 1950 1980 written by Stephen Stratford and published by . This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bill Alington, Jim Beard, Bill Toomath and Derek Wilson have individually and collectively created an outstanding body of work, rooted in the philosophies of modern architecture, demonstrating a humanity of thought and a mastery of materiality and detail. Their architectural education during the 1940s and early 1950s consisted of brave new ideas being explored at the School of Architecture, and then study and experience in Europe and the United States, which prepared them for their time as architects in practice in Wellington. They embraced the ideas of modernism at its height and sought to bring these qualities of good design to New Zealand architecture. They all possessed strong views about how architecture could be socially accessible, with a direct and honest approach to design; an economy of means; simple and direct planning; and a mastery of detail and materiality. In Wellington in the 1950s their work stood out against the mediocrity of the built environment of the time. Their houses demonstrated a clarity of thought, and their later projects consisted of significant public buildings: the Met Office in Kelburn, the Hannah Playhouse in the city, the Teachers' Training College in Karori and the NIWA building in Evans Bay. They practiced separately and together, and their body of work extended from the late 1940s to the 1990s. They have maintained their friendship and collegiality, and meet regularly to discuss architecture with their own conferences. The legacy of their work is very important to Wellington architecture but also as a national influence of the time. This book features four key projects from each, complemented by vignettes of other work to provide linking projects and continuity of the work in the office. Original photographs have been used to capture the essence of the projects at the time of completion, and Simon Devitt was commissioned to photograph one project of each architect as it stands today. Essays by Paul Walker and Julia Gatley explore their work and their involvement in the Architectural Centre. A four-hour interview with the four of them together describes much of their thinking and influences, and their continuing passion for architecture. Featuring many of the buildings designed by William Allington, James Beard, William Toomath and Derek Wilson.
