Book Proceedings of the 8th International Symposium on Insect Plant Relationships

Download or read book Proceedings of the 8th International Symposium on Insect Plant Relationships written by Steph B.J. Menken and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers in this book are organized as follows: insect-plant communities, host-plant selection, genetics and evolution, host-plant resistance and application of transgenic plants, and multitrophic interactions. Besides seven invited papers and a paper with concluding remarks, this volume also contains the short communications of all 115 oral presentations and posters. Included too, are the summaries of four European Science Foundation workshops held over the past two years, where European scientists discussed the state-of-the-art and the future of major topics in insect-plant interactions in order to develop better integrated research programs. The field of insect-plant interactions nowadays includes almost all of biology, as well as parts of chemistry and physics. It takes a central position in biology because insects are the most abundant animal group, half of them are herbivores and they dominate all terrestrial ecosystems. Knowledge of insect-plant interactions is thus fundamental to an understanding of the evolution of life on Earth. Two major topics of worldwide concern give this field an extra dimension. First, large amounts of food crops are still lost due to insect pests. With the increasing concern for environmental pollution and the subsequent plans to drastically reduce pesticides, integrated pest management and development of resistant crops become a major focus in agriculture. The importance of the study of insect-plant relationships is thus continuously augmented. Clearly, successful pest control demands sufficient fundamental knowledge of pest-host interactions. Second, such work can contribute towards stopping or even counterbalancing the threatening biodiversity crisis thanks to an understanding of how the interaction of insects and plants has influenced and still influences the diversification and speciation (evolution) of both groups. These problems should, of course, be approached at a multitrophic level.

Book Blueberries 2nd Edition

Download or read book Blueberries 2nd Edition written by Jorge B Retamales and published by CABI. This book was released on 2018-08-01 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blueberry cultivation has increased dramatically as production has shifted into new regions. Blueberries are now widely available as food and also processed to be used in medicine and pharmaceuticals for their antioxidant properties. This new and updated edition covers the major topics of interest to blueberry breeders and researchers including botany, physiology, nutrition, growth regulation, photosynthesis, environment, weeds, pests, diseases and postharvest management. The main focus is on the most important cultivated species, the highbush blueberry, although information on other blueberries and related species is also provided. It is an essential resource for soft fruit researchers, extension workers, academics, breeders, growers, and students.

Book Precision Agriculture

Download or read book Precision Agriculture written by Qamar Zaman and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2023-05-18 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Precision Agriculture: Evolution, Insights and Emerging Trends presents a complete guide from foundational concepts to the economic, commercial and environmental implications of the approach. Showcasing recent research improvements, future trends, and highlighting innovative use of machine vision, artificial intelligence, UAVs, drones, IoT and data analytics to promote sustainable agriculture, the book brings the reader up-to-date with understanding and implementing this targeted practice. From the basic elements of agronomy to insights on reflectance and remote sensing indices, chapters use summary abstracts, case studies and real-world examples of implementing the tools of precision agriculture (PA) to demonstrate the latest advances. It includes explanations on the origin of the intra-plot variability of a culture (spatial and temporal), different types of existing sensors, controllers and site-specific management. The book further explores yield monitoring, weed, disease and pest control, automated irrigation systems, PA tools for variable rate application of inputs within the field, and data processing methods. By also exploring the economic profitability of precision farming approaches, and its utility for sustainable agriculture, Precision Agriculture: Evolution, Insights and Emerging Trends is a truly comprehensive view of this important approach to improving global agriculture production. Scientists, researchers, policymakers, graduate and postgraduate students, and engineers in the related fields of agriculture, computer science and engineering will benefit from this book. - Addresses soil, machinery, plants, irrigation, sensors, UAVs and more - Explores current and future technologies in the field of Precision Agriculture - Details comprehensive cost-benefit analysis for governments and other policymakers to incentivize and promote precision agriculture technology
