  • Author : Xiaofeng Meng
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2011-01-27
  • ISBN : 3642131999
  • Pages : 200 pages

Download or read book Moving Objects Management written by Xiaofeng Meng and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-01-27 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in an age of rapid technological development. The Internet already affects our lives in many ways. Indeed, we continue to depend more, and more intrinsically, on the Internet, which is increasingly becoming a fundamental piece of societal infrastructure, just as water supply, electricity grids, and transportation networks have been for a long time. But while these other infrastructures are relatively static, the Internet is undergoing swift and fundamental change: Notably, the Internet is going mobile. The world has some 6.7 billion humans, 4 billion mobile phones, and 1.7 billion Internet users. The two most populous continents, Asia and Africa, have relatively low Internet penetration and hold the greatest potentials for growth. Their mobile phone users by far outnumber their Internet users, and the numbers are growing rapidly. China and India are each gaining about half a dozen million new phone users per month. Users across the globe as a whole increasingly embrace mobile Internet devices, with smart phone sales are starting to outnumber PC sales. Indeed, these and other facts suggest that the Internet stands to gain a substantial mobile component. This mega trend towards “mobile” is enabled by rapid and continuing advances in key technology areas such as mobile communication, consumer electronics, g- positioning, and computing. In short, this is the backdrop for this very timely book on moving objects by Xiaofeng Meng and Jidong Chen.

Book Algorithms for Memory Hierarchies

Download or read book Algorithms for Memory Hierarchies written by Ulrich Meyer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2003-04-07 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algorithms that have to process large data sets have to take into account that the cost of memory access depends on where the data is stored. Traditional algorithm design is based on the von Neumann model where accesses to memory have uniform cost. Actual machines increasingly deviate from this model: while waiting for memory access, nowadays, microprocessors can in principle execute 1000 additions of registers; for hard disk access this factor can reach six orders of magnitude. The 16 coherent chapters in this monograph-like tutorial book introduce and survey algorithmic techniques used to achieve high performance on memory hierarchies; emphasis is placed on methods interesting from a theoretical as well as important from a practical point of view.

The workshop concluded the results of this large-scale effort, summarized and addressed issues encountered, and devised a work plan for the future evaluation of XML retrieval systems. The 37 full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 42 submissions; they are organized into sections corresponding to the nine tracks of the workshop, investigating various aspects of XML retrieval, from book search to entity.

Book Efficient Optimization and Processing of Queries Over Text rich Graph structured Data

Download or read book Efficient Optimization and Processing of Queries Over Text rich Graph structured Data written by Günter Ladwig and published by KIT Scientific Publishing. This book was released on 2014-05-13 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many databases today capture both, structured and unstructured data. Making use of such hybrid data has become an important topic in research and industry. The efficient evaluation of hybrid data queries is the main topic of this thesis. Novel techniques are proposed that improve the whole processing pipeline, from indexes and query optimization to run-time processing. The contributions are evaluated in extensive experiments showing that the proposed techniques improve upon the state of the art.
