Download or read book UV A written by John Parrish and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origin of this text was a request by industry and government to summarize the biological effects and to estimate the limits of safe exposure to longwave ul traviolet radiation. The specific issue was the safety of a small medium-pressure mercury arc designed to emit UV-A (NUVA-Lite, L. D. Caulk Co. , Milford, Delaware) for photopolymerization of resinous fillings used in dentistry. How- ever, the context grew to become a consideration of the risks and benefits to hu mans of electromagnetic radiation between the biologically active short UV and the visible spectrum. We have accumulated data from our own experimental work and from the literature and have attempted to put this information in the perspective of known biologic effects of ultraviolet radiation as it influences hu mans. Interest in the biological effects of longwave ultraviolet radiation is increas ing in all of the many scientific disciplines that make up the complex field of photobiology. In order to minimize the chance for error and personal prejudice and to maximize the use of expertise, each chapter has been reviewed by several authorities. Some of the contributions of this group led to significant alterations and creative additions to the chapter, and these persons deserve not only our sin cere gratitude but also recognition by the reader. These include Chapters 2 and 3: Dr. Robert E. Levin, Mr. Charles P. Comeau, Mr. Donald Gonser, Dr. David Sliney; Chapter 5: Dr. Jerry Williams, Dr. Robert Webb, Dr. Madhu A.

Download or read book Sleep and Sleep Disorders written by Malcolm Lader and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-11-06 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many recent discoveries in both laboratory and clinical settings have greatly increased our understanding of sleep medicine and the relevant psychopharmacology. This timely book serves to present updated information about the neuropsychopharmacology of sleep as this field enters mainstream psychiatry, neurology and medicine This volume has assembled articles that summarize and review carefully, a chosen selection of the latest discoveries concerning sleep medicine, sleep physiology and sleep pharmacology. Outstanding contributions have been sought from acknowledged experts in their respective fields. The goal of the volume is to present the more recent developments and advances in the fields of sleep and neuropsychopharmacology, as well as to provide a context for considering them both in depth and from multidisciplinary perspectives. This volume brings together the collective expertise of clinicians and basic researchers who represent a range of interests in neuroscience, neuropharmacology, sleep physiology, and biological rhythms. Presenting a thoughtful balance of basic experimental and clinical facts and viewpoints, this book will serve as a foundation for understanding, and ultimately treating, sleep disorders.
Download or read book Radiation Protection and Recovery written by Alexander Hollaender and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern Trends in Physiological Sciences, Volume 7: Radiation Protection and Recovery covers the biological, physiological, and biochemical methods created to protect living organisms from radiation damage. This book is composed of 12 chapters that evaluate the methods of protecting macromolecules in vitro against ionizing radiation damage. It addresses the degradation of polymethacrylic acid and the polymerization of vinyl monomers. Some of the topics covered in the book are the chemical protection to mammals against ionizing radiation; chemical protective agents; methods of protection and recovery in bacteria and fungi; and effect of cultural conditions and physiological state on radiosensitivity. Other chapters deal with the experimental modification of radiosensitivity and the role of phase state in inactivitation. These topics are followed by an analysis of the effect of the gaseous environment during irradiation. The chemical protection against inactivation and mutation is also presented. The last chapter is devoted to the environmental factors in radioresistance. The book can provide useful information to doctors, radiologists, students, and researchers.
Download or read book Biological Solar Energy Conversion written by Akira Mitsui and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biological Solar Energy Conversion is a publication comprised of formal papers presented during the 1976 conference on Biological Solar Energy Conversion held at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science. The conference aims to bring together a group of scientists who have made significant observations concerned with various aspects of solar energy conversion. The ideas and information presented in this publication intend to expand the understanding of the readers about the biological processes involved in biological solar energy conversion and direct them to practical application. This compilation is divided into four sections and consists of 25 scholarly articles about the subject matter. The first section includes papers that discuss developments in the methods employed in the capture and utilization of solar energy. The second and third sections feature papers that dealt with the synthesis of organic compounds from carbon dioxide and nitrogen fixation and production of single cell protein. The last section of the publication presents papers that show future trends and practical applications involved in the biological conversion of solar energy. This book will be an excellent reference for researchers working on energy research and development. This collection of scientific articles can also be an invaluable reference for agriculture, meteorology, plant sciences, agronomy, and biology students.
