Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook of locally based agricultural practices brings together the best of science and farmer experimentation, vividly illustrating the enormous diversity of shifting cultivation systems as well as the power of human ingenuity. Environmentalists have tended to disparage shifting cultivation (sometimes called 'swidden cultivation' or 'slash-and-burn agriculture') as unsustainable due to its supposed role in deforestation and land degradation. However, a growing body of evidence indicates that such indigenous practices, as they have evolved over time, can be highly adaptive to land and ecology. In contrast, 'scientific' agricultural solutions imposed from outside can be far more damaging to the environment. Moreover, these external solutions often fail to recognize the extent to which an agricultural system supports a way of life along with a society's food needs. They do not recognize the degree to which the sustainability of a culture is intimately associated with the sustainability and continuity of its agricultural system. Unprecedented in ambition and scope, Voices from the Forest focuses on successful agricultural strategies of upland farmers. More than 100 scholars from 19 countries--including agricultural economists, ecologists, and anthropologists--collaborated in the analysis of different fallow management typologies, working in conjunction with hundreds of indigenous farmers of different cultures and a broad range of climates, crops, and soil conditions. By sharing this knowledge--and combining it with new scientific and technical advances--the authors hope to make indigenous practices and experience more widely accessible and better understood, not only by researchers and development practitioners, but by other communities of farmers around the world.

Download or read book Process Control written by Béla G. Lipták and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2013-10-02 with total page 1580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Instrument Engineers' Handbook, Third Edition: Process Control provides information pertinent to control hardware, including transmitters, controllers, control valves, displays, and computer systems. This book presents the control theory and shows how the unit processes of distillation and chemical reaction should be controlled. Organized into eight chapters, this edition begins with an overview of the method needed for the state-of-the-art practice of process control. This text then examines the relative merits of digital and analog displays and computers. Other chapters consider the basic industrial annunciators and other alarm systems, which consist of multiple individual alarm points that are connected to a trouble contact, a logic module, and a visual indicator. This book discusses as well the data loggers available for process control applications. The final chapter deals with the various pump control systems, the features and designs of variable-speed drives, and the metering pumps. This book is a valuable resource for engineers.

Download or read book Social Agency written by Wojciech W. Gasparski and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Praxiology deals with doing and working from the point of view of effectiveness. It has three components: analysis of concepts involving purposive actions; critique of models of action from the viewpoint of efficiency; and normative advisory aspects in recommendations for increasing human efficiency. This fourth volume of the Praxiology series is devoted to the very special topic of social agency. It focuses on two important praxiological concepts: rationality and preparation as preconditions for human action to be effective and efficient. The question of efficiency was raised by Anatol Rapoport over three decades ago in his lecture to the audience at the Praxiological Seminar in Warsaw in 1961. Social Agency begins with an article written by this same famous scholar on the topic of decision theory, "Social Dilemmas: A Historical Overview." Social dilemmas is the subject of the first part of this volume, a question related to studies on human action guided by two types of rationality: individual and collective rationality. The intersection of the two, in which individuals meet collectives, creates the situation in which social agency emerges, generating dilemmatic circumstances for the actors involved. The articles collected in the second part explore praxiological dimensions of education aimed toward the knowledge society, because of knowledge possessed and produced by educated persons. Chapters and contributors to volume 4 include: "Five Questions on the Research on Social Dilemmas" by Marek K. Mlicki; "Psychological Processes Underlying Cooperation in Social Dilemmas" by Paul A. M. Van Lange and David M. Messick; "Designing a System for Design Learning: Designers and/or Learners?" by Arne Collen; "Creating an Evolutionary Image of New Systems of Learning and Human Development" by Janet A. Khan; and "A Study Program Design in Retrospect" by Stig C. Holmberg. Social Agency continues the trend of original research done in a little-known, but important area. Social scientists, policymakers, and educators will benefit from this work.

Download or read book Energy Waste and the Environment written by R. Gieré and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2004 with total page 694 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides incentives for further development of sustainable fuel cycles through a novel and interdisciplinary approach to an Earth science-related topic. The main focus is on geochemical concepts in immobilizing, isolating or neutralizing waste derived from energy production and consumption. The book also addresses the issue of using some types of energy-derived waste as alternative raw materials. Moreover, it highlights research on how certain wastes can be used for energy production, an increasingly important aspect of modern integrated waste management strategies. The main objectives are to: (a) identify the most serious environmental problems related to various types of power generation and associated waste accumulation; (b) present strategies, based on natural analogue materials, for the immobilization of toxic and radioactive waste components through mineralogical barriers; (c) discuss modern procedures for reuse of waste or certain waste components; and (d) review the importance of geochemical modelling in describing and predicting the interaction between waste and the environment.

Download or read book Collaborative Learning Underlying Processes and Effective Techniques written by Kris Bosworth and published by Jossey-Bass. This book was released on 1994-10-27 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The demographic makeup of the student population in higher education has changed in dramatic ways over the past decade. These changes have motivated questions about what constitutes knowledge and about how we learn and understand new concepts, processes, and skills. Working from the premise that knowledge is not a quantifiable mass of information to be transmitted but rather a socially constituted process of making meaning within constantly changing and interacting contexts, the authors of this volume seek to define and extend current understanding of collaborative learning in higher education. Each chapter blends theory and practice as it explores a particular aspect of the processes underlying collaborative learning. Case studies from three universities demonstrate collaborative learning in action, its potential and its challenges. This volume uses information about current developments in collaborative learning across the country to extend our understanding of its possibilities and offer guidance to faculty who wish to establish effective collaborative learning classrooms. This is the 59th issue of the quarterly journal New Directions for Teaching and Learning.
Download or read book Deconvolution of Images and Spectra written by Peter A. Jansson and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2014-05-05 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deconvolution is a technique in signal or image processing that is applied to recover information. When it is employed, it is usually because instrumental effects of spreading and blurring have obscured that information. In 1996, Deconvolution of Images and Spectra was published (Academic Press) as a second edition of Jansson's 1984 book, Deconvolution with Applications in Spectroscopy. This landmark volume was first published to provide both an overview of the field, and practical methods and results. The present Dover edition is a corrected reprinting of the second edition. It incorporates all the advantages of its predecessors by conveying a clear understanding of the field while providing a selection of effective, practical techniques. The authors assume only a working knowledge of calculus, and emphasize practical applications over topics of theoretical interest, focusing on areas that have been pivotal to the evolution of the most effective methods. This tutorial is essentially self-contained. Readers will find it practical and easy to understand.
