Book excerpt: The genesis of this volume was in a one-day meeting arranged under the auspices of the Nathematical Ecology Group, jointly of the British Region of the Biometric Society and the British Ecological Society, and held in the Natural History Museum in London on the 4th May 1982. The object of the meeting was to bring together individuals from different dis ciplines but with a common interest in ornithology. In this volume we have tried to preserve the flavour of the meeting so that all but two of the papers read or pre sented as posters can be found here. The two papers that have not been included have since been published elsewhere: see Birkhead and Nettleship (1983) and Cav~ (1983). Further papers have been added to the volume from contributors who were unable to attend the London meeting, or were unable to present a paper there. All of the papers were refereed by ourselves. A volume which contains papers by both statisticians and non-statisticians is inevitably going to be variable with regard to the depth and range of statistical techniques used. Thus non-statisticians are likely to find some of the papers written by statisticians difficult at times, and conversely statisticians n2Y find that they would have treated some problems differently from non-statisticians. It is hoped, however, that this volun~ will increase awareness of the interests and problems (including solutions), in the general area of ornithology, and stimulate cross-fertilisation of ideas.

Magpies are unmistakable in their appearance, voice and extrovert, arrogant manner. While their persecution at the hands of gamekeepers over the last hundred years has made them wary and difficult to approach, a number of recent field studies, both in Europe and North America, have successfully revealed the intricacies of the magpie way of life. Tim Birkhead has studied both species, and has produced a fascinating account of their ecology and behaviour. Many of the results from his ten-year study of magpies in northern England are published here for the first time. Particularly revealing however is his comparison of the two species and of their different races. Magpies occur in a wide range of habitats, including English farmland, the deserts of North America, the mountains of Saudi Arabia and the windswept plateaus of Tibet. As this book explains, magpies are able to exploit this diversity of habitats largely through their remarkably flexible social behaviour. The Magpies covers all aspects of their lives, including their marital relationships, food hoarding behaviour, longevity and survival, nesting behaviour, breeding success and their controversial relationship with man. The text is supported by numerous photographs, diagrams and tables, and superb illustrations by David Quinn.

Book excerpt: These volumes represent the proceedings of NATO Advanced Study Institute on the topic of "Cognitive Processes and Spatial Orientation in Animal and Man" held at La-Baume-les-Aix, Aix-en-Provence, France, in June-July 1985. The motivation underlying this Institute stemmed from the recent advances and interest in the problems of spatial behavior. In Psychology, traditional S-R concepts were found to be unsatisfactorY for fully accounting for the complexity of spatial behavior. Coupled with the decline in such an approach, has been a resurgence of interest in cognitive types of concepts. In Ethology, investigators have begun to use more sophisticated methods for the study of homing and navigational behaviors. In the general area of Neuroscience, marked advances have been achieved in the understanding of the neural mechanisms underlying spatial behaviors. And finally, there has been a burgeoning interest and body of knowledge concerning the development of spatial behavior in humans. All of these factors combined to suggest the necessity of bringing together scientists working in these areas with the intent that such a meeting might lead to a cross-fertilization of the various areas. Possibly by providing a context in which members of the various disciplines could interact, it was felt that we might increase the likelihood of identifying those similarities and differences in the concepts and methods common to all groups. Such an identification could provide the basis for a subsequent interdisciplinary research effort.
