Book Pollution Prevention and Waste Minimization Tools Workshops

Download or read book Pollution Prevention and Waste Minimization Tools Workshops written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the second workshop was to bring together representatives of DOE and DOE contractor organizations to discuss four topics: process waste assessments (PWAs), a continuation of one of the sessions held at the first workshop in Clearwater; waste minimization reporting requirements; procurement systems for waste minimization; and heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) and replacements for chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). The topics were discussed in four concurrent group sessions. Participants in each group were encouraged to work toward achieving two main objectives: establish a c̀̀lear vision ̀̀of the overall target for their sessions̀ program, focusing not just on where the program is now but on where it should go in the long term; and determine steps to be followed to carry out the target program.

Book Opportunity Assessments

Download or read book Opportunity Assessments written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Waste costs, liabilities, and regulations continue to be growing concerns for government and industry. Pollution prevention opportunity assessments (PPOAs) are a tool which proactively manages these concerns. The Department of Energy (DOE) has recognized the benefits of PPOAs in the DOE Waste Minimization Pollution Prevention Crosscut Plan which states that the completion of opportunity assessments is of critical importance to DOE because they are an essential management decision-making tool that tell DOE: (1) how much waste and environmental releases can be avoided; (2) through what activity/process changes waste reduction can be achieved; (3) what it will cost to implement a pollution prevention opportunity; and (4) what will be the long-term savings in avoided waste management costs. Before exploring what a PPOA is, a brief discussion of pollution prevention is necessary. Pollution prevention (P2) may also be referred to as waste minimization, source reduction, and/or recycling. The definition used in the DOE-sponsored PPOA training class is: {open_quotes}Pollution prevention reduces or eliminates material releases to air, water, and/or land.{close_quotes} The benefits of pollution prevention include a proactive approach to waste management, compliance issues, and liability concerns; economic incentives; improved employee and public health; and environmental stewardship. Basically it all boils down to the phrase, {open_quotes}It's the right thing to do.{close_quotes}

Book Pollution Prevention and Waste Minimization in Laboratories

Download or read book Pollution Prevention and Waste Minimization in Laboratories written by Peter A. Reinhardt and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1995-11-16 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This nuts and bolts book addresses specific waste minimization and pollution prevention techniques that work in specific types of laboratories for specific wastestreams. Concepts in the book may be directly applied to laboratory operations. In addition, the book illustrates other approaches to laboratory pollution prevention, such as reducing wastewater discharges and fume hood emissions. A wide range of waste types, including hazardous, infectious, medical, PCB, and radioactive, are discussed. This book helps you to develop a broad, institutional framework to plan and set priorities for pollution prevention. It responds to your laboratory's critical need to have readily available techniques and concepts for waste minimization and pollution prevention.
