Book Distributed Systems for System Architects

Download or read book Distributed Systems for System Architects written by Paulo Veríssimo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary audience for this book are advanced undergraduate students and graduate students. Computer architecture, as it happened in other fields such as electronics, evolved from the small to the large, that is, it left the realm of low-level hardware constructs, and gained new dimensions, as distributed systems became the keyword for system implementation. As such, the system architect, today, assembles pieces of hardware that are at least as large as a computer or a network router or a LAN hub, and assigns pieces of software that are self-contained, such as client or server programs, Java applets or pro tocol modules, to those hardware components. The freedom she/he now has, is tremendously challenging. The problems alas, have increased too. What was before mastered and tested carefully before a fully-fledged mainframe or a closely-coupled computer cluster came out on the market, is today left to the responsibility of computer engineers and scientists invested in the role of system architects, who fulfil this role on behalf of software vendors and in tegrators, add-value system developers, R&D institutes, and final users. As system complexity, size and diversity grow, so increases the probability of in consistency, unreliability, non responsiveness and insecurity, not to mention the management overhead. What System Architects Need to Know The insight such an architect must have includes but goes well beyond, the functional properties of distributed systems.

Book Building Intelligent Agents

Download or read book Building Intelligent Agents written by Gheorghe Tecuci and published by Morgan Kaufmann. This book was released on 1998-06-23 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building Intelligent Agents is unique in its comprehensive coverage of the subject. The first part of the book presents an original theory for building intelligent agents and a methodology and tool that implement the theory. The second part of the book presents complex and detailed case studies of building different types of agents: an educational assessment agent, a statistical analysis assessment and support agent, an engineering design assistant, and a virtual military commander. Also featured in this book is Disciple, a toolkit for building interactive agents which function in much the same way as a human apprentice. Disciple-based agents can reason both with incomplete information, but also with information that is potentially incorrect. This approach, in which the agent learns its behavior from its teacher, integrates many machine learning and knowledge acquisition techniques, taking advantage of their complementary strengths to compensate for each others weakness. As a consequence, it significantly reduces (or even eliminates) the involvement of a knowledge engineer in the process of building an intelligent agent.

Book Cyberimperialism

Download or read book Cyberimperialism written by Bosah Ebo and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2000-11-30 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays addresses whether all nations will actively participate in building the information superhighway or whether the Internet will reflect global technological inequalities. The writings are grouped in four major sections, which examine theoretical issues on cyberglobalization, politics in the electronic global village, global economic issues in cyberspace, and national identities and grassroots movements in cyberspace. Contributing scholars represent a wide spectrum of disciplines from political science, economics, and communications to sociology, anthropology, and philosophy. A number of methodological and theoretical perspectives direct the writings. Collectively, the essays point toward an emerging technology that exhibits innate qualities characteristic of the classic notion of cultural imperialism. This edited collection, with its timely approach to the implications of the Internet for global relations, will appeal to communication, sociology, and political science scholars. The interdisciplinary approach will also attract students and educators from such fields as anthropology, philosophy and economics. To aid in further research, select bibliographies follow each essay.

Book Networking Developments in the Caucasus Region

Download or read book Networking Developments in the Caucasus Region written by Jean-Paul Nadreau and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing connectivity to remote academic and research institutions is a challenge. One of the challenges of the book is to go beyond the physical (the mountains) of the Caucasus and the political barriers in the region. The objectives of the book are: to give the opportunity to network managers and policy makers to meet physically and exchange views on the networking situation in their region; the help the managers define the needs of the region and the possible areas of co-operation; and to provide managers with the proper information and expertise for planning projects in the area in the future.

Book Mobile Computing

  • Author : Tomasz Imielinski
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2007-08-26
  • ISBN : 0585296030
  • Pages : 736 pages

Download or read book Mobile Computing written by Tomasz Imielinski and published by Springer. This book was released on 2007-08-26 with total page 736 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid development of wireless digital communication technology has cre ated capabilities that software systems are only beginning to exploit. The falling cost of both communication and of mobile computing devices (laptop computers, hand-held computers, etc. ) is making wireless computing affordable not only to business users but also to consumers. Mobile computing is not a "scaled-down" version of the established and we- studied field of distributed computing. The nature of wireless communication media and the mobility of computers combine to create fundamentally new problems in networking, operating systems, and information systems. Further more, many of the applications envisioned for mobile computing place novel demands on software systems. Although mobile computing is still in its infancy, some basic concepts have been identified and several seminal experimental systems developed. This book includes a set of contributed papers that describe these concepts and sys tems. Other papers describe applications that are currently being deployed and tested. The first chapter offers an introduction to the field of mobile computing, a survey of technical issues, and a summary of the papers that comprise sub sequent chapters. We have chosen to reprint several key papers that appeared previously in conference proceedings. Many of the papers in this book are be ing published here for the first time. Of these new papers, some are expanded versions of papers first presented at the NSF-sponsored Mobidata Workshop on Mobile and Wireless Information Systems, held at Rutgers University on Oct 31 and Nov 1, 1994.
