Book Linguistics Today Facing a Greater Challenge

Download or read book Linguistics Today Facing a Greater Challenge written by Piet van Sterkenburg and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2004-10-13 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every five years the Permanent International Committee of Linguists (CIPL) organises a world congress for linguists. And every five years the Committee faces the challenge of presenting a programme at the highest possible level. The CIPL Executive Committee decided for the Congress planned for 2003 in Prague to focus on four major topics which play an important role in today’s linguistic debate: 1. Typology, 2. Endangered Languages, 3. Methodology and Linguistics (including fieldwork) and 4. Language and the mind. Leading experts have introduced the four themes in their plenary lectures in the course of the congress, which served as a basis for the articles presented in the current volume. This book should be a welcome tool for all linguists wishing to find their way quickly in current developments. A CD-Rom containing the full proceedings of the Prague Congress is included.

Book Intelligent Data Analysis for Real Life Applications Theory and Practice

Download or read book Intelligent Data Analysis for Real Life Applications Theory and Practice written by Magdalena-Benedito, Rafael and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2012-06-30 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the recent and enormous increase in the amount of available data sets of all kinds, applying effective and efficient techniques for analyzing and extracting information from that data has become a crucial task. Intelligent Data Analysis for Real-Life Applications: Theory and Practice investigates the application of Intelligent Data Analysis (IDA) to these data sets through the design and development of algorithms and techniques to extract knowledge from databases. This pivotal reference explores practical applications of IDA, and it is essential for academic and research libraries as well as students, researchers, and educators in data analysis, application development, and database management.

Book Centering Theory in Discourse

Download or read book Centering Theory in Discourse written by Marilyn A. Walker and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection of previously unpublished papers focuses on Centering Theory, an account of local discourse structure. Developed in the context of computational linguistics and cognitive science, Centering theory has attracted the attention of an international interdisciplinary audience. As the authors focus on naturally occurring data, they join the general trend towards empiricism in research on computational models of discourse, providing a significant contribution to a fast-moving field.

Book Impirical Foundations of Information and Software Science

Download or read book Impirical Foundations of Information and Software Science written by Jagdish C. Agrawal and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the Second Symposium on Empirical Foundations of Informa tion and Software Science (EFISS) was, in essence, the same as that of the First Symposium in this series, i. e. to explore subjects and methods of sci entific inquiry which are of fundamental and common interest to information and software sciences, and to map directions of research that will benefit from the mutual interaction of these two fields. In fact, one of the most important results of the First EFISS Symposium was the conclusion that the commonality of these two sciences is much more than just the commonality of their objects of study, namely, the study of informative and prescriptive properties of texts in all kinds of sign sys tems (such as natural or artificial languages). Rather, the most challeng ing problems appear to be in the areas in which both these sciences overlap, such as, for instance, the problem of trade-offs between informative and prescriptive uses of texts. This problem can be formulated in generic terms as follows: given a certain kind of action or activity which has been pre scribed to some agent, i. e. which is required to be implemented or carried out, what kind of information should be provided to the agent, in what form, and how should it be distributed over the contextual structure of the pre scriptive text to enable the agent to carry out the action or activity most effectively and efficiently.

Book Text and Speech Triggered Information Access

Download or read book Text and Speech Triggered Information Access written by Steve Renals and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-09-09 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents revised versions of the lectures given at the 8th ELSNET European Summer School on Language and Speech Communication held on the Island of Chios, Greece, in summer 2000. Besides an introductory survey, the book presents lectures on data analysis for multimedia libraries, pronunciation modeling for large vocabulary speech recognition, statistical language modeling, very large scale information retrieval, reduction of information variation in text, and a concluding chapter on open questions in research for linguistics in information access. The book gives newcomers to language and speech communication a clear overview of the main technologies and problems in the area. Researchers and professionals active in the area will appreciate the book as a concise review of the technologies used in text- and speech-triggered information access.

Book Corpus Based Methods in Language and Speech Processing

Download or read book Corpus Based Methods in Language and Speech Processing written by Steve Young and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corpus-based methods will be found at the heart of many language and speech processing systems. This book provides an in-depth introduction to these technologies through chapters describing basic statistical modeling techniques for language and speech, the use of Hidden Markov Models in continuous speech recognition, the development of dialogue systems, part-of-speech tagging and partial parsing, data-oriented parsing and n-gram language modeling. The book attempts to give both a clear overview of the main technologies used in language and speech processing, along with sufficient mathematics to understand the underlying principles. There is also an extensive bibliography to enable topics of interest to be pursued further. Overall, we believe that the book will give newcomers a solid introduction to the field and it will give existing practitioners a concise review of the principal technologies used in state-of-the-art language and speech processing systems. Corpus-Based Methods in Language and Speech Processing is an initiative of ELSNET, the European Network in Language and Speech. In its activities, ELSNET attaches great importance to the integration of language and speech, both in research and in education. The need for and the potential of this integration are well demonstrated by this publication.
