Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1913 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER V THE RURAL CHURCH SERVING A COMMUNITY The subject of this chapter refers to the church in the rural community, or it may imply the task of the country church in creating a community where there is none, or the task of giving Christian leadership to a community already socially conscious, but in danger, as in some cases, of becoming pagan unless the church fulfills its function. Why are we focusing our attention to-day upon the rural life of the nation? Because it includes not only over one half (fifty-three per cent) of the population of this country, but it also represents the great resource field of the nation's wealth. It is here also we discover such splendid heroic individuality as has produced the largest percentage of moral, religious, industrial, and political leadership of all the ages; and yet at the same time we discover national waste of resources--natural, human, and spiritual--because here we find the least of community interest and cooperation. Why are we discussing so often in these days the problems of the country church? Because in many sections of our country it presents to us one of the most difficult mission fields of the world to cultivate, for the reason that, like the slums of the great cities, it is a lost home field. As one goes back to his home county in the rural sections of the Eastern, Southern, and some of the Middle Western States, what does he discover? The splendid old circuit system broken up and the fires of religious fervor gone out upon many an abandoned church and family altar, while the message of the minister in the neglected pulpit of the dilapidated church building is about as effective in creating a community spirit as the noise of a lone woodpecker on a dead tree in a swamp. Why is...

What are the best courses of Bible study for working farmers? IS the present doctrinal training obsolete? Does the philosophy and theology taught in colleges and seminaries unfit men for rural service by its individualism? By teaching about exceptional instances, mira cles, wonders, heroism and saints, instead of teaching obedience to law, average cases, standards of conduct, typical men, practicable, economical and ethical levels? Is the seminary training for rural pastors unsuited by its traditions, viz., a prayer for rain in a region watered by irrigation? Does social efficiency suffer through the teach ing of sectarian doctrines? What course of seminary training would fit men for rural service? Should the seminary or the agricultural col lege train men for service in the country? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Country Church and the Rural Problem

Download or read book The Country Church and the Rural Problem written by Kenyon L. Butterfield and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-16 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Country Church and the Rural Problem: The Carew Lectures at Hartford Theological Seminary We come then to the principle that the church is vital to the solution of the rural problem, be cause the things the church stands for are vital to a permanent rural civilization. Church and industry are intimately bound together. The rural church cannot thrive for long unless the agricultural business thrives. But on even higher grounds we see that the same principle applies. The church is but a means to an end. It is a servant of human welfare. In so far as business prosperity, education, social life make for human welfare, just so far are they allies of the church. The crisis in the country church consists in the question, Has it the power to meet the new demand, so utterly different from the old in many essential phases, although the same in respect to the abiding needs of the human heart? It is the conviction of these fundamental ideas, namely, the unity of the rural problem, the absolute necessity of utilizing the church in solving the rural problem, and the need of a new point of view on the part of the church if it is to do its part in solving the problem, that has led to the present volume. It is hoped that it may be an encouragement to pastors already in the rural field and an incentive to virile young men who love a hard but great task, and indeed may be of interest to public spirited and thoughtful laymen in the rural churches. Book Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States

Download or read book Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-07-29 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scores of talented and dedicated people serve the forensic science community, performing vitally important work. However, they are often constrained by lack of adequate resources, sound policies, and national support. It is clear that change and advancements, both systematic and scientific, are needed in a number of forensic science disciplines to ensure the reliability of work, establish enforceable standards, and promote best practices with consistent application. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States: A Path Forward provides a detailed plan for addressing these needs and suggests the creation of a new government entity, the National Institute of Forensic Science, to establish and enforce standards within the forensic science community. The benefits of improving and regulating the forensic science disciplines are clear: assisting law enforcement officials, enhancing homeland security, and reducing the risk of wrongful conviction and exoneration. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States gives a full account of what is needed to advance the forensic science disciplines, including upgrading of systems and organizational structures, better training, widespread adoption of uniform and enforceable best practices, and mandatory certification and accreditation programs. While this book provides an essential call-to-action for congress and policy makers, it also serves as a vital tool for law enforcement agencies, criminal prosecutors and attorneys, and forensic science educators.
