Book excerpt: The Knowledge Seeker is a useful system to develop various intelligent applications such as ontology-based search engine, ontology-based text classification system, ontological agent system, and semantic web system etc. The Knowledge Seeker contains four different ontological components. First, it defines the knowledge representation model ¡V Ontology Graph. Second, an ontology learning process that based on chi-square statistics is proposed for automatic learning an Ontology Graph from texts for different domains. Third, it defines an ontology generation method that transforms the learning outcome to the Ontology Graph format for machine processing and also can be visualized for human validation. Fourth, it defines different ontological operations (such as similarity measurement and text classification) that can be carried out with the use of generated Ontology Graphs. The final goal of the KnowledgeSeeker system framework is that it can improve the traditional information system with higher efficiency. In particular, it can increase the accuracy of a text classification system, and also enhance the search intelligence in a search engine. This can be done by enhancing the system with machine processable ontology.

The conference re?ected the rapidly evolving landscape of digital libraries, both in technology developments and in the focus of approaches to implem- tation. In addition, the conference p- gramme began to address, possibly for the ?rst time, the associated themes of e-research/e-scienceand e-learning and their relationship to digital libraries. We observed increasing commonality in both the distributed information archit- tures and the technical standards that underpin global infrastructure devel- ments. Digital libraries are integral to this information landscape and to the creation of increasingly powerful tools and applications for resource discovery and knowledge extraction. Digital libraries support and facilitate the data and information ?ows within the scholarly knowledge cycle and provide essential - abling functionality for both learnersand researchers. The varied and innovative research activities presented at ECDL 2004 demonstrate the exciting potential of this very fast-moving ?eld. The 148 papers, 43 posters, 5 panels, 14 tutorials and 4 workshops subm- ted this year were once again of the highest quality.

The basic technological infrastructure for e-services is structured around three major standards: SOAP, WSDL, and UDDI. These standards p- vide building blocks for service description, discovery, and interaction. E-service technologies have clearly in?uenced positively the development of integrated - stems by providing programmatic access to e-services through SOAP, WSDL, and UDDI. E-services are evolving toward being able to solve critical integ- tion issues including security, transactions, collaborative processes management, semantic aspects, and seamless integration with existing middleware infrastr- tures. VLDB-TES 2003 was the fourth workshop in a successful series of annual workshops on technologies for E-services, held in conjunction with the VLDB conference. The objective of VLDB-TES 2003 was to bring together researchers, practitioners,anduserstoexchangenewideas,developments,andexperienceson issues related to E-services. VLDB-TES 2003 took place in Berlin, Germany. It featured the presentation of 16 regular papers. In addition to the presentation of research papers, the workshop included two invited talks and a panel discussion.

The main focus of DASFAA is on research in database theory, development of advanced DBMS technologies, and their advanced applications. A premier database conference in the Asia/Pacific region, DASFAA has been held every two years, and in many countries in the region. To promote the area further and to answer the needs of many participants, the steering committee decided to hold the conference annually. DASFAA 2004 was the first such annual conference. The conference was organized by the Special Interest Group on Databases (SIGDB) of the Korea Information Science Society and the Advanced Information Technology Research Center (AITrc) at KAIST - an engineering research center of excellence (ERC) supported by the Korea Science and Engineering Foundation (KOSEF). We had a number of sponsors who made generous contributions to make the conference successful.
