Download or read book Convexity and Its Applications written by GRUBER and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of surveys consists in part of extensions of papers presented at the conferences on convexity at the Technische Universitat Wien (July 1981) and at the Universitat Siegen (July 1982) and in part of articles written at the invitation of the editors. This volume together with the earlier volume «Contributions to Geometry» edited by Tolke and Wills and published by Birkhauser in 1979 should give a fairly good account of many of the more important facets of convexity and its applications. Besides being an up to date reference work this volume can be used as an advanced treatise on convexity and related fields. We sincerely hope that it will inspire future research. Fenchel, in his paper, gives an historical account of convexity showing many important but not so well known facets. The articles of Papini and Phelps relate convexity to problems of functional analysis on nearest points, nonexpansive maps and the extremal structure of convex sets. A bridge to mathematical physics in the sense of Polya and Szego is provided by the survey of Bandle on isoperimetric inequalities, and Bachem's paper illustrates the importance of convexity for optimization. The contribution of Coxeter deals with a classical topic in geometry, the lines on the cubic surface whereas Leichtweiss shows the close connections between convexity and differential geometry. The exhaustive survey of Chalk on point lattices is related to algebraic number theory. A topic important for applications in biology, geology etc.

Download or read book Wild Things written by Frederick W. F. Foulds and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2014-11-30 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently, Palaeolithic and Mesolithic archaeology has been breaking boundaries worldwide. Finds such as the Mesolithic house at Howick, the sequencing of the Neanderthal genome, and the recently discovered footprints at Happisburgh all serve to indicate how archaeologists in these fields are truly at the cutting edge of understanding humanityÍs past. This volume celebrates this trend by focusing on recent advances in the study of the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic. With contributors from a diverse range of backgrounds, it allows for a greater degree of interdisciplinary discourse than is often the case, as the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic are generally split apart. Wild Things brings together contributions from major researchers and early career specialists, detailing research taking place across the British Isles, France, Portugal, Russia, the Levant and Europe as a whole, providing a cross-section of the exciting range of research being conducted. By combining papers from both these periods, it is hoped that dialogue between practitioners of Palaeolithic and Mesolithic archaeology can be further encouraged. Topics include: the chronology of the Mid-Upper Palaeolithic of European Russia; territorial use of Alpine high altitude areas by Mesolithic hunter-gatherer; discussing the feasibility of reconstructing Neanderthal demography to examine their extinction; the funerary contexts from the Mesolithic burials at Muge; the discovery of further British Upper Palaeolithic parietal art at Cathole Cave; exploitation of both lithics and fauna in Palaeolithic France; and an analysis of Mesolithic/Neolithic trade in Europe.
Download or read book The Quantitative Description of the Microstructure of Materials written by Krzysztof Jan Kurzydlowski and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1995-07-21 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, the product of a deep collaboration between the two authors, strikes a balance between the traditional approach and newly emerging techniques used to obtain a quantitative description of the microstructure of materials. The Quantitative Description of the Microstructure of Materials has a unique format that sets it apart from other books. The first half of the book gives a comprehensive account of the entire quantification process and presents material in a pedagogical style. Numerous examples appear throughout text to illustrate the methodology. A general introduction to the subject and basic concepts, definitions, techniques, and relationships are provided. Aspects of modern stereology are described in detail. Image processing, computer aided procedures of data analysis, and the elements of a system for image analysis also are discussed at length. The remaining chapters treat a series of significant examples in much more detail. This part of text offers information in an easy-to-access reference style, making it extremely useful as a guide to active researchers in the quantification guide. Topics include dislocations, internal and external surfaces, and quantitative characterization of thin film structures. The book covers geometry of grains and its effect on the properties of polycrystals. Particles, pores, and other isolated volumetric elements of the microstructure also are discussed.

Download or read book Intracellular Staining in Neurobiology written by Stanley B. Kater and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to provide basic reference material to facilitate the further development and application of the intracellular staining techniques which originated with the introduction of Procion dye as a neurocellular stain. We had sev eral specific objectives in compiling these chapters. First, we recognized that both the techniques and results of intracellular staining have been derived from a variety of preparations and published in diverse journals. Consequently, we tried to make this information more readily available by incorporating several reviews by original authors. This should provide the reader with a knowledge of the kinds of neurobiological prob lems for which intracellular staining has already been employed. A second objective was to facilitate extension of these methods to a wider variety of problems. To this end there are chapters dealing with Procion dye as a marker for ultrastructural investi gations, the use of cobalt as a staining compound and the implementation of computer techniques for quantitative studies of neuronal relationships. As background for further extension of these methods this volume contains material on the history of the discovery of Procion dyes as intracellular stains, the chemistry of these dyes, and fundamentals of fluorescence microscopy. Our final specific objective was to present details of technical procedures that were not readily available in the literature.
