La tercera y última, compuesta por seis capítulos, revisa la Unidad de cuidados intensivos como servicio para la salud, y aborda desde la derivación de pacientes a la mejora y estandarización de la práctica de cuidados intensivos, entre otras cuestiones. Características principales: Enfoque multidisciplinar con la participación de intensivistas en el ámbito de la cirugía, la anestesia y la medicina, así como personal de enfermería de cuidados intensivos, terapeutas respiratorios y farmacólogos. Novedades de la 6a edición: Ampliamente revisado para incluir las necesidades actuales de atención multidisciplinaria y de varios profesionales para una atención integral óptima. Se han añadido dos capítulos: 1) manejo de cuidados críticos en enfermedades relacionadas con el virus del ébola y 2) ECMO (oxigenación por membrana extracorpórea) y dispositivos de asistencia ventricular.
