Book excerpt: In this dissertation is proposed a new framework for reconstructing the evolution of the CS nominal declensional system, with particular attention to the role which the *-u-stems may have played. This dissertation falls into three parts. I) A discussion of the IE background, in which is outlined a new framework for the reconstruction of the nominal system. Also, a brief review of some of the relevant literature on the *-u-stem declension in CS is offered. II) Problems caused by the proposed framework. In previous discussions of CS nominal morphology heavy reliance has been placed on Auslautgesetze (sound changes peculiar to the final syllable). In this study, however, an attempt has been made to dispense with Auslautgesetze and seek morphological (i.e., analogical) solutions for the relevant problems. In section A a theoretical framework for the proposed solutions is discussed in some detail, and in sections B, C, and D the role played by the *-u-stems is described. Sections E, F, G, and H deal with other forms for which Auslautgesetze have been proposed, and in each instance an alternative explanation is offered. Ill) The evolution of the *-u-stem endings in the modern Slavic languages. In these final sections the attested development of undisputed *-u-stem endings is outlined. Some parallels between the reconstructed prehistoric developments and the attested developments are noted.

Book excerpt: The larger part of the present volume is about Slavic historical linguistics while the second part is about more general issues and methodological aspects. The initial chapters contain a revision of the author’s Slavic Accentuation and a discussion of the Slovene evidence for the Late Proto-Slavic accentual system and of the Kiev Leaflets. These are complemented by an extensive review of Garde’s theory and an introductory article about the work of earlier authors for those who are unfamiliar with the subject. Then follows a discussion of changes in the vowel system, Bulgarian developments, final syllables in Slavic, early changes in the consonant system, and of Halle and Kiparsky’s review of Garde’s book. This results in a relative chronology of 70 stages from Proto-Indo-European to Slavic. The following chapters deal with the progressive palatalization, the accentuation of West and South Slavic languages, various aspects of the Old Slovene manuscripts, the chronology of nominal paradigms, and other issues under discussion in recent publications. The second part of the present volume contains a number of case studies exemplifying specific theoretical problems, most of them of a semantic nature. The synchronic studies deal with Russian and Japanese syntax and semantics, the diachronic studies with tonogenesis in different languages and with semantic reconstruction in Altaic and Chinese.

It is a diachronic study of word-formation patterns in Proto-Slavic and their derivation from Proto-Indo-European. All conclusions about the origin of individual nominal suffixes, prefixes and compounding patterns are drawn from the reconstructed Proto-Slavic nominal lexicon. In this way, those word-formation patterns that can be attributed to Proto-Slavic can be distinguished from those that became productive independently in individual Slavic languages. The book contains a discussion of the meaning of Proto-Slavic nominal suffixes and prefixes, their origin and possible Proto-Indo-European sources, as well as an analysis of the accentual patterns associated with them. It also discusses in general outlines the productivity and development of individual nominal suffixes and prefixes in later stages of Slavic, including the major modern languages.
