Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems of Expansion as Considered in Papers and Addresses 0 general have been the expressions as to the value of these scattered papers and addresses that I have thought it a useful service to gather them together from the authorized publications at the time, or, in some cases, from newspaper reports, and (with the consent of the Century Co. And of Mr. John Lane for the copyrighted arti cles) to embody them consecutively, in the order of their several dates, in this volume. The article entitled The Territory with which We are Threatened was prepared before the appointment of its author as a member of the Commission to negotiate terms of peace with Spain, and published only a few days afterward. This circum stance attracted unusual attention to its views about retaining the territory the country had taken. Book Multiparameter Eigenvalue Problems and Expansion Theorems

Download or read book Multiparameter Eigenvalue Problems and Expansion Theorems written by Hans Volkmer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-11-14 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a self-contained treatment of two of the main problems of multiparameter spectral theory: the existence of eigenvalues and the expansion in series of eigenfunctions. The results are first obtained in abstract Hilbert spaces and then applied to integral operators and differential operators. Special attention is paid to various definiteness conditions which can be imposed on multiparameter eigenvalue problems. The reader is not assumed to be familiar with multiparameter spectral theory but should have some knowledge of functional analysis, in particular of Brower's degree of maps.

Book A Unified Approach to Uniqueness Expansion and Approximation Problems

Download or read book A Unified Approach to Uniqueness Expansion and Approximation Problems written by Chiu-Cheng Chang and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1994 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the concept of P¢lya property for holomorphic functions of two and several variables. The functions which have the P¢lya property are used to study the uniqueness problem for entire functions. This gives interesting results for a general class of generating functions. The functions with P¢lya property are also used as generating kernels in formal generating relations to study the expansion problem for entire functions. A necessary and sufficient condition is obtained for an entire function to have a unique expansion in a series of various known polynomials generated from the formal generating relations. In this book, it is shown that the uniqueness problem for entire functions of exponential type is equivalent to the approximation problem for analytic functions. This result, in combination with other results, produces many interesting theorems on the approximation of analytic functions. Since functions with P¢lya property have very useful applications, the study of a class of linear operators which preserve the P¢lya property is embarked upon and two sufficient conditions for an operator to be P¢lya-property-preserving are given.

Book excerpt: University Physics is designed for the two- or three-semester calculus-based physics course. The text has been developed to meet the scope and sequence of most university physics courses and provides a foundation for a career in mathematics, science, or engineering. The book provides an important opportunity for students to learn the core concepts of physics and understand how those concepts apply to their lives and to the world around them. Due to the comprehensive nature of the material, we are offering the book in three volumes for flexibility and efficiency. Coverage and Scope Our University Physics textbook adheres to the scope and sequence of most two- and three-semester physics courses nationwide. We have worked to make physics interesting and accessible to students while maintaining the mathematical rigor inherent in the subject. With this objective in mind, the content of this textbook has been developed and arranged to provide a logical progression from fundamental to more advanced concepts, building upon what students have already learned and emphasizing connections between topics and between theory and applications. The goal of each section is to enable students not just to recognize concepts, but to work with them in ways that will be useful in later courses and future careers. The organization and pedagogical features were developed and vetted with feedback from science educators dedicated to the project. VOLUME II Unit 1: Thermodynamics Chapter 1: Temperature and Heat Chapter 2: The Kinetic Theory of Gases Chapter 3: The First Law of Thermodynamics Chapter 4: The Second Law of Thermodynamics Unit 2: Electricity and Magnetism Chapter 5: Electric Charges and Fields Chapter 6: Gauss's Law Chapter 7: Electric Potential Chapter 8: Capacitance Chapter 9: Current and Resistance Chapter 10: Direct-Current Circuits Chapter 11: Magnetic Forces and Fields Chapter 12: Sources of Magnetic Fields Chapter 13: Electromagnetic Induction Chapter 14: Inductance Chapter 15: Alternating-Current Circuits Chapter 16: Electromagnetic Waves

Book Expansion Joints in Buildings

Download or read book Expansion Joints in Buildings written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1974-02-01 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many factors affect the amount of temperature-induced movement that occurs in a building and the extent to which this movement can occur before serious damage develops or extensive maintenance is required. In some cases joints are being omitted where they are needed, creating a risk of structural failures or causing unnecessary operations and maintenance costs. In other cases, expansion joints are being used where they are not required, increasing the initial cost of construction and creating space utilization problems. As of 1974, there were no nationally acceptable procedures for precise determination of the size and the location of expansion joints in buildings. Most designers and federal construction agencies individually adopted and developed guidelines based on experience and rough calculations leading to significant differences in the various guidelines used for locating and sizing expansion joints. In response to this complex problem, Expansion Joints in Buildings: Technical Report No. 65 provides federal agencies with practical procedures for evaluating the need for through-building expansion joints in structural framing systems. The report offers guidelines and criteria to standardize the practice of expansion joints in buildings and decrease problems associated with the misuse of expansions joints. Expansions Joints in Buildings: Technical Report No. 65 also makes notable recommendations concerning expansion, isolation, joints, and the manner in which they permit separate segments of the structural frame to expand and to contract in response to temperature fluctuations without adversely affecting the buildings structural integrity or serviceability.
