The purpose of the conference was to assess the current state of knowledge and to outline future research directions of quantum dynamical semigroups on von Neumann algebras. Since the appearance of the landmark papers by F. Murray and J. von Neumann, On the Rings of Operators, von Neumann algebras have been used as a mathematical model in the study of time evolution of quantum mechanical systems.Following the work of M. H. Stone, von Neumann, and others on the structure of one-parameter groups of unitary transformations, many researchers have made fundamental contributions to the understanding of time-reversible dynamical systems. This book deals with the mathematics of time-irreversiblesystems, also called dissipative systems. The time parameter is the half-line, and the transformations are now endomorphisms as opposed to automorphisms. For over a decade, W. B. Arveson and R. T. Powers have pioneered the effort to understand the structure of irreversible quantum dynamical systems on von Neumann algebras. Their papers in this volume serve as an excellent introduction to the theory. Also included are contributions in other areas which have had an impact on the theory, such asBrownian motion, dilation theory, quantum probability, and free probability. The book is intended for researchers, postgraduate and senior students working in operator theory, partial differential equations, probability and stochastic processes, analytical methods in biology and other natural sciences, optimisation and optimal control. The theory of semigroups of operators is a well-developed branch of functional analysis. Its foundations were laid at the beginning of the 20th century, while Hille and Yosida’s fundamental generation theorem dates back to the forties. The theory was originally designed as a universal language for partial differential equations and stochastic processes but, at the same time, it started to become an independent branch of operator theory. Today, it still has the same distinctive character: it develops rapidly by posing new ‘internal’ questions and, in answering them, discovering new methods that can be used in applications. On the other hand, it is being influenced by questions from PDE’s and stochastic processes as well as from applied sciences such as mathematical biology and optimal control and, as a result, it continually gathers new momentum. However, many results, both from semigroup theory itself and the applied sciences, are phrased in discipline-specific languages and are hardly known to the broader community.

For semigroups of *-endomorphisms this set can be described through cocycles. This helps us to prove a factorization theorem for dilations and to show that minimal dilations of quantum dynamical semigroups with bounded generators can be got through Hudson-Parthasarathy cocycles.

Book excerpt: Using Dwork's theory, the authors prove a broad generalization of his famous -adic formal congruences theorem. This enables them to prove certain -adic congruences for the generalized hypergeometric series with rational parameters; in particular, they hold for any prime number and not only for almost all primes. Furthermore, using Christol's functions, the authors provide an explicit formula for the “Eisenstein constant” of any hypergeometric series with rational parameters. As an application of these results, the authors obtain an arithmetic statement “on average” of a new type concerning the integrality of Taylor coefficients of the associated mirror maps. It contains all the similar univariate integrality results in the literature, with the exception of certain refinements that hold only in very particular cases.
