Book Woodcock Status Report 1965

Download or read book Woodcock Status Report 1965 written by William H. Goudy and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 1194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Singing-ground surveys of the American woodcock indicate that breeding populations have increased gradually over the past 7 years while production, as indicated by wing-collection surveys, has remained relatively stable. The woodcock harvest, meanwhile, has probably more than doubled during the past decade. This suggests that while woodcock are probably becoming more important to North American sportsmen, hunting mortality is still relatively unimportant.

Book Factors Influencing Waterfowl Counts on Aerial Surveys 1961 66

Download or read book Factors Influencing Waterfowl Counts on Aerial Surveys 1961 66 written by R. Kahler Martinson and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surveying of selected transects from the air and from the ground has been used since 1959 to determine the proportion of waterfowl, by species, that are observed by aerial crews. This method attempts to resolve obvious biases in aerial indexes relating to habitat differences, seasonal differences, aerial crew changes, etc. Assumptions in this method of correction are that (1) the ground crew observed substantially all waterfowl present and (2) the selected comparison transects adequately represent surrounding transects to which the correction is to be applied. This report, utilizing data of 1961 to 1966, reviews the necessity for air:ground correction and evaluates the procedure as a solution to aerial index biases ; problems apparent are lack of representativeness of air:ground transects and inadequate numbers of transects. Lack of representativeness appears in population density and in species composition differences between air:ground and operational transects. The degree to which the numbers of air:ground ratios varies according to areas and according to species. Recommendations to improve the air:ground technique are: (1) make two daily surveys of one aerial pass each, at an interval of at least two hours, in the same direction and at the same time as the adjacent operational transects are surveyed ; (2) make ground counts the day before or day after aerial surveys ; (3) lay out all air:ground comparison transects in the same direction (west-east) as the operational transects ; and (4) match new or relocated transects as nearly as possible to density and species composition of the survey stratum or area they represent.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The genesis of this volume was in a one-day meeting arranged under the auspices of the Nathematical Ecology Group, jointly of the British Region of the Biometric Society and the British Ecological Society, and held in the Natural History Museum in London on the 4th May 1982. The object of the meeting was to bring together individuals from different dis ciplines but with a common interest in ornithology. In this volume we have tried to preserve the flavour of the meeting so that all but two of the papers read or pre sented as posters can be found here. The two papers that have not been included have since been published elsewhere: see Birkhead and Nettleship (1983) and Cav~ (1983). Further papers have been added to the volume from contributors who were unable to attend the London meeting, or were unable to present a paper there. All of the papers were refereed by ourselves. A volume which contains papers by both statisticians and non-statisticians is inevitably going to be variable with regard to the depth and range of statistical techniques used. Thus non-statisticians are likely to find some of the papers written by statisticians difficult at times, and conversely statisticians n2Y find that they would have treated some problems differently from non-statisticians. It is hoped, however, that this volun~ will increase awareness of the interests and problems (including solutions), in the general area of ornithology, and stimulate cross-fertilisation of ideas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The principal purpose of this collection of reports is historical: to record permanently some aspects of the biology and management of waterfowl in eastern Canada and of the "state of the art" in the responsible federal agency in the early 1970's. A secondary reason is the realization that too little of the work being done was being made available to audiences outside the Canadian Wildlife Service (CWS) and provincial agencies"--Introd.

Book excerpt: "In the calendar year 1964, the main efforts of the Division of Wildlife Research were directed toward consolidation of recently expanded programs on pesticide-wildlife relations and nuisance-animal control. A modest increase in activities associated with the captive propagation of rare and endangered birds was accommodated, and a great deal of planning laid groundwork for future work with threatened species. There was no change in purpose and function of the Division"--Page 1
