Download or read book Problems and Prospects of Sustaining Democracy in Nigeria written by Bamidele A. Ojo and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2001 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past few years have been very traumatic ones for many Nigerians. With the exception of those in power or close to the seat of power, the changes of 1998 were a welcome relief given the tyranny and repression that the country had suffered under General Abacha. With many people in prison and more in exile, the death of Abacha was received with a sigh of relief. Many observers have seen the resilience that has come to signify the strength and potential of this once 'giant of Africa', as well as the destruction and the socio-political and economic decay of the past decades. The Nigerian people have endured the exploitation of their rights due to the lack of democratic leadership, and with this in mind, they have been called to attention to fight for their country.

Book excerpt: Challenges and Prospects in African Education System: The general idea this book is trying to disseminate is to inform readers about the compelling challenges and prospects in African system of education. As we all know, when issues of Africa educational system is raised, the first set of thoughts that come to mind is decline in standard, deterioration of facilities, examination malpractices, cult crises or school-based violence, shortage of teachers, underqualified teachers, and poor teachers performance, which results in poor learning standards, lack of classroom discipline that is exacerbated by insufficient resources and inadequate infrastructure, failure of appropriate inspection and monitoring, and confusion caused by changing curricula without proper communication and training. All these have led to massive demoralization and disillusionment among teachers and a negative and worsening perception of African system of education. This, therefore, calls for in-depth analysis aimed at tutoring every stakeholder in education on how their action and inactions have individually and collectively contributed to the collapsing state of education in Africa. However, the prospect is that Africas recovery and sustainable development can only be guaranteed through expansion and sustenance of both quantitative and qualitativeof the continents stock of human capital through education. In order for education to realize its key role in development, it must be provided to the younger segments of African society as quickly as human and financial resources permit, with the ultimate goal of developing a comprehensive, meaningful and sustainable system of education at all levels and for all age groups. This is the message that this book puts across in the six knitted sections.

This book was released on 2019-01-15 with total page 679 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays explores the critical and fluid nature of security challenges that have plagued Nigeria since colonial times. Insecurity in diverse forms remains the bane of growth and progressive development in the country, and has the capability to derail a society no matter how sophisticated. What has generated insecurity at the macro- and micro-levels? How has insecurity been tackled? Why have security challenges escalated particularly in the post-independence period? What lessons could be learnt from the way security matters have been (mis)handled in the past? This volume presents chapters on the historical roots and antecedents of security challenges, and considers the nexus between the economy, political leadership and development, and its impacts on security in modern Nigeria. It also explores the effectiveness of the strategies employed to address security challenges, and discusses why some security challenges have lingered.

Download or read book West African Youth Challenges and Opportunity Pathways written by Mora L. McLean and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-10-21 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open-access edited collection, focusing on Ghana and Nigeria, offers a transatlantic, transnational exploration of barriers that threaten the wellbeing of West African youth—ranging from Black immigrant youth in the American city of Newark, New Jersey, to students in Almajiri Islamic schools in Northern Nigeria. Incorporating themes of migration, vulnerability, and agency and aspirations, the book conveys the resilience of African youth transitioning toward adulthood in a world of structural inequality. It thus crosses the academic divide between Youth Studies and African Studies, while challenging conventional framings of Black youth as deficient and deviant—positing instead their individual and collective creativity and assets. The contributors employ different methodological approaches, including field research and autoethnography, from varying multidisciplinary and practitioner perspectives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research evaluates what the National Youths Service Corps members community perceives as their support needs in Nigeria in tackling poverty. It also analyses the process of leveraging policymaking, using social marketing techniques. It seeks a deeper understanding of the poverty elimination processes in Nigerian and beyond. A mixed-methods research design was adopted engaging a quantitative approach in which 351 NYSC members were surveyed using self-completion questionnaires. In addition, qualitative studies in which policy-makers as well as young people within the NYSC members community were interviewed. The main findings of the research reveal that young people: NYSC members support-needs in Nigeria are inadequate. A great deal more needed to be done. A Marshall-plan scale of support is required. The most significant causes of poverty amongst the NYSC members are absence of jobs, corruption of government officials, low wages, tribalism, oil pollution, natural disasters, IMF/World Bank conditionalities and wars. The main experiences of poverty include a high youth unemployment rate, No money to-go-to-school, No money to start small businesses, less food to eat, no money to treat sickness, no money to buy-clothes, no money to afford decent homes, prostitution, absence of a public transportation system as well as into-drugs and into-kidnapping.
Download or read book Statism Youth and Civic Imagination written by Ebenezer Obadare and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2010-06-01 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explores the service-citizenship nexus in Nigeria, using the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme as an empirical backdrop. It attempts to understand the relationship between civic service and citizenship on the one hand, and it examines the question as to whether youth service promotes a sense of citizenship and patriotism on the other. In the relevant studies on service and sociology, the assumption that service is antecedent to, and impacts positively on citizenship, is taken for granted. However, conclusions from this study call for an urgent rethinking of this wisdom. Using data from open-ended interviews, questionnaires and focus group discussions, the study traces the ways in which political dynamics in Nigeria have affected the implementation of the NYSC programme. The study articulates allegiance to national ideals as an essential foundation for creating and nurturing citizenship. Although it upholds the potential of national service as a tool for national integration, this research cautions against unalloyed faith in its presumed agency, arguing that the limitations imposed by the prevailing socio-political ecology should not be ignored.
