Book Interaction of Borrowing and Word Formation

Download or read book Interaction of Borrowing and Word Formation written by ten Hacken Pius ten Hacken and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-02 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on detailed case studies across a range of languages, including English, German, Dutch, Italian, Portuguese, Polish, Czech, Russian, Lithuanian and Greek, this book examines the different factors that determine the outcome of the interaction between borrowing and word formation. Historically, borrowing has largely been studied from etymological and lexicographical perspectives and word formation has been included in morphology. However, this book focuses on their mutual influence and interaction. Bringing together a range of contributors, each chapter illustrates how borrowing and word formation are in competition as alternative naming processes, while also showing how they can influence each other. The case studies are framed by an introduction that describes the general background and a conclusion that summarises the main findings.

Book Latin A Linguistic Introduction

Download or read book Latin A Linguistic Introduction written by Renato Oniga and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-08-21 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook provides a detailed introduction to the study of Latin from the perspective of contemporary linguistics. It adopts some basic tenets of generative grammar in an in-depth analysis of the main phonological, morphological, and syntactic properties of Latin, and offers a step-by-step guide to the universal principles and specific parameters which shape the language, along with comparative data from English and other languages. Latin: A Linguistic Introduction is a user-friendly and essential guide to the synchronic study of Latin as a natural language. The clarity of exposition and the richness of the examples cited provide a new approach to Latin as a topic of linguistic research: although the general structure of the book is like that of a traditional Latin grammar, the discussion of grammatical rules is both more straightforward and more theoretically informed. This textbook is principally suitable for students of Latin and Romance linguistics at undergraduate level and above, but also for teachers and researchers interested in new ways of looking at the study of Latin. It differs from many other textbooks in the field by striking a valuable balance between the longstanding tradition of classical philology and the innovations of contemporary linguistics.

Book Medical Latin in the Roman Empire

Download or read book Medical Latin in the Roman Empire written by D. R. Langslow and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2000-06-08 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the ubiquitous importance of medicine in Roman literature, philosophy, and social history, the language of Latin medical texts has not been properly studied. This book presents the first systematic account of a part of this large, rich field. Concentrating on texts of `high' medicine written in educated, even literary, Latin Professor Langslow offers a detailed linguistic profile of the medical terminology of Celsus and Scribonius Largus (first century AD) and Theodorus Priscianus and Cassius Felix (fifth century AD), with frequent comparisons with their respective near-contemporaries. The linguistic focus is on vocabulary and word-formation and the book thus addresses the large question of the possible and the preferred means of extending the vocabulary in Latin at the beginning and end of the Empire. Some syntactic issues (including word order and nominalization) are also discussed, and sections on the sociolinguistic background and stylistic features consider the question to what extent we may speak of `medical Latin' in the strong sense, as the language of a group, and draw comparisons and contrasts between ancient and modern technical languages.

Book Sub Indo European Europe

Download or read book Sub Indo European Europe written by Guus Kroonen and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-10-21 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dispersal of the Indo-European language family from the third millennium BCE is thought to have dramatically altered Europe's linguistic landscape. Many of the preexisting languages are assumed to have been lost, as Indo-European languages, including Greek, Latin, Celtic, Germanic, Baltic, Slavic and Armenian, dominate in much of Western Eurasia from historical times. To elucidate the linguistic encounters resulting from the Indo-Europeanization process, this volume evaluates the lexical evidence for prehistoric language contact in multiple Indo-European subgroups, at the same time taking a critical stance to approaches that have been applied to this problem in the past.

Book Etymological Dictionary of Etruscan Words

Download or read book Etymological Dictionary of Etruscan Words written by Adolfo Zavaroni and published by Youcanprint. This book was released on 2024-03-25 with total page 765 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Dictionary allows you to completely and rationally translate the longest and most important Etruscan texts. It is based on etymological comparison with ancient Indo-European languages. The greatest number of decisive matches is obtained with Proto-Germanic, but the Greek and Italic dialects also provide useful comparisons for the interpretation of a fair number of words. According to the A., before settling in Italy the Etruscans were a nomadic people who acquired words and lexemes from Indo-European people among whom they had temporarily settled in previous centuries and who in any case used to travel and exchange goods or raid.
