Book excerpt: The exhibition presented at the Musée de l'Abbaye / Guy Bardone - René Genis Donations in Saint-Claude, and then at the Musée d'Art Roger-Quilliot in Clermont-Ferrand, includes more than eighty works (paintings and drawings) brought together in the first study on the theme of landscape in the work of Édouard Vuillard and Ker-Xavier Roussel. In the 1890s, the two artists were first of all looking to renew the genre of landscape painting by subjecting it to the rather radical experimentations of the Nabis aesthetic. Ten years later however, they turned towards Post-Impressionism and in the 1920s and 1930s their aim was to go back to the tradition of French classicism, a "return to order" that combined the legacy of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries with Puvis de Chavannes's great decorative works. Three essays shed some light on the rather singular relationship between the two artists, their specific use of pastels as well as the artistic context of the 1890s and the first decades of the twentieth century. Then comes a catalogue of all of the works presented in the two venues, paralleling the exhibition visit, with a number of commentated entries.

Book excerpt: In 1999, a short video of a solitary boy kicking an empty bottle up a hill in Mexico City became the first instalment of Children’s Games, a series of works by artist Francis Alÿs (b. Antwerp, 1959). The ongoing project, which now numbers around thirty-five works, has gradually given shape to an extensive collection of videos of children at play. For almost twenty-five years, Alÿs and his collaborators Félix Blume, Julien Devaux, and Rafael Ortega have been travelling around the world to document the distinctive ways in which children interact with each other and their physical environment. They have gone from remote villages in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Afghanistan, Venezuela, and Nepal to the mountains of Switzerland and metropoles like Hong Kong and Paris, but have also visited the war-torn city of Mosul in Iraq, the border between Mexico and the United States, and the strait of Gibraltar that divides Africa and Europe. The resulting images are standing proof of the seriousness of play and of children’s stunning powers of resilience in the face of conflict. This volume provides a multidisciplinary perspective to the many layers of Children’s Games. But Pelosi says the public are not fools: "Everyone knows that the media do not give them an accurate portrait of a person." No wonder people are apathetic. But whose fault is it? Are the candidates driving people away from the political process, or are the media keeping them out? Probing, insightful, and lively, Sneaking into the Flying Circus exposes the election process for what it is: a three-ring gala production that comes to town every four years. As a nation and an audience, we're often willing to suspend disbelief -- and we often can't resist when the clowns try to get us in on the act. It is, after all, the greatest show on earth.

Retail space has cropped up just about everywhere in the urban landscape: in libraries, workplaces, churches and museums. In short, retail is becoming a more and more manifest part of the public domain. The traditional spaces of retail, such as city centres and outlying shopping malls, are either increasing in size or disappearing, producing new urban types and whole environments totally dedicated to retail. The creation of these new retail spaces has brought about a re- and de-territorialisation of urban public space, and has also led to transformations in urban design and type of materials used, and even in the logic and ways through which these design amenities meet the needs of retailers and/or consumers. This book describes how the retailisation of public domains affects our everyday life and our use of the built environment. Taking an architectural and territorial perspective on this issue, it looks specifically at how retail and consumption spaces have changed and territorialised urban life in different ways. It then develops a methodology and a set of concepts to describe and understand the role of architecture in these territorial transformations.
