Excerpt: ... there is no good reason against her doing so, the nurse must manage to do all the small tasks that can be accomplished outside the sick-room early in the day, though it is a less convenient arrangement for herself. She must not only respect expressed preferences, but her imagination must be on the alert, ready to perceive, without the need of words, what is agreeable or disagreeable to her charge. She must carry out the doctor's orders to the last detail, as she did in the hospital, but she must do it without the air of command which is so irritating to the helpless. A patient once told me that when she was ill she always felt that her doctor and nurse were in league against her, and that she was powerless in their hands. She was not an unreasonable woman, either. Make your patient feel that you and she and the doctor are in league for her good, if there must be a league. If both nurse and patient have a sense of humor, half one's problems are solved. A little fun goes a long way toward shortening the weary hours of a long day, --but one should beware of ill-timed mirth. A bright face is good to see, and we should cultivate the spirit that produces it, but there is an irritating sort of cheerfulness, a tiring exuberance, which is present in season and out of season, and which would make a well person weary. It is well to keep family worries out of the sick-room, but not to tell untruths in order to do so. Some persons have the pernicious habit of shielding a patient from worry by deceit, and the nurse may be asked to fall in with the scheme. It is a great mistake to do so. When a helpless person feels that she is being deceived, she suspects every one and worries more than she would have done over the original trifle. A nurse should..

These patients make up a large community of peculiar and trying persons. To deal with them wisely and kindly requires exceptional qualities of mind and character. The training of nurses and attendants for these patients must cover a much wider field than is comprised in the course of the ordinary trained nurse. The nurse for the insane must be prepared to care for the ordinary medical and surgical diseases of her patients, in addition to their mental ailments; for insanity does not exempt them from the other ills that flesh is heir to. She must safeguard them from injuring themselves or others, must possess many of the qualities that make a good teacher, since a part of her duty is to help correct faults in early train ing and development, and to encourage and train to correct and useful habits and proper behavior; she has also to employ and entertain her patients, under the direction of the medical officers; and to her is intrusted that almost constant association and companionship which, if sympathetic and judicious, is one of the most potent means of restoring her charges to mental health. The possession Of a diploma from any first-class training school is a guarantee that the graduate can earn, if she chooses so to do, an honest and honorable livelihood. When, as time goes on, the supply comes more nearly to equal the demand, the public and the profession will be able to exercise more choice in the matter and then the best nurses will come to the front. This school will soon find itself in more marked com petition with other schools. The aim Of the directors must therefore be to graduate the best possible nurses. With that end in View, changes in the course and methods Of instruction are constantly being introduced. Every endeavor is being made to give our students the best education that can be given. Among these changes is the introduction Of a closing lecture, to be given each year by some member of the Hospital Staff, on the duties and conduct Of nurses in private practice.
