Book excerpt: Haunting her ever since his death, Mark would always carry around her brother's urn enduring the whispers that would accuse her at every turn. Now a prisoner, those whispers have become louder and with them hallucinations of the thing she truly did not want to be. Mark is alone now, or that's what she wanted. However, life is a funny thing, it seldom grants people wishes without a price. Sometimes she can't tell what's reality and what's an illusion, the voice of her brother resounded from the urn she carried, chanting the words traitor, traitor. At first they were whispers, things she could ignore, things she could disregard. She was so close to ridding herself of them, into the open flame that night, but as fate would have it, life decided to be unkind and take away her wish in a blaze of fire and shrapnel. Throwing her into a place where those whispers became shouts and the only remedy was the feeling of a blade in her hands.

Book Immortal Captives

Download or read book Immortal Captives written by Mauriel Joslyn and published by Pelican Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1864, the prisoner exchange program had collapsed, a failure politically motivated by Abraham Lincoln's war council. Some victims of the program's failure were 600 Confederate officers from all 14 Southern states who were denied parole. In Charleston Harbor, 50 officers were held as human shields against the artillery fire of their comrades. Elsewhere, Confederate officers were forced to suffer through a winter during which they were deprived of medical care, food, and warmth. The soldiers slowly died from malnutrition, exposure, untreated wounds, and disease although food and medicine were available in abundance to their captors. Officers in charge of overseeing the prisoners were embarrassed by this treatment, but were forced to obey orders.

Book excerpt: In 1864, six hundred Confederate prisoners of war, all officers, were taken out of a prison camp in Delaware and transported to South Carolina, where most were confined in a Union stockade prison on Morris Island. They were placed in front of two Union forts as "human shields" during the siege of Charleston and exposed to a fearful barrage of artillery fire from Confederate forts. Many of these men would suffer an even worse ordeal at Union-held Fort Pulaski near Savannah, Georgia, where they were subjected to severe food rationing as retaliatory policy. Author and historian Karen Stokes uses the prisoners' writings to relive the courage, fraternity and struggle of the "Immortal 600."

Book Immortal Captives

Download or read book Immortal Captives written by Mauriel Joslyn and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Immortal Captives is two books in one. Mauriel Joslyn has used the story of 600 Confederate prisoners of war to provide insight into the larger questions about prisoner of war issues in the Civil War. Combining original scholarship with full quotations from the participants in the events she describes, she has created both a memorial to the captured officers who came to be held at Fort Pulaski, Georgia and a good history. The policies of President Abraham Lincoln, Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant, in addition to those of lower ranking Union leaders come under reevaluation in this story. The Union deliberately chose 600 Confederate officers from fourteen Southern states for its policy of retaliation. Against humanity, those officers were forced to face the artillery fire of their comrades when they were placed in a stockade in Charleston Harbor from August to October of 1864. Their ordeal continued when they were moved to Fort Pulaski for the winter. The last of them were not released until July 1865, months after the war ended.
