Book A Deputy Warden s Reflections on Prison Work

Download or read book A Deputy Warden s Reflections on Prison Work written by Adria L. Libolt and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2012-01-20 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a picture of prison life from the inside. It illustrates prison life as, at turns, exciting, surprising, distressing and, often, amusing. Each day is different, and anyone who walks through a prison gate had better be alert. It tells of the small human dramas that play out daily among staff, prisoners, and others who enter this gated world. It calls the reader to see that justice begins by seeing each person, staff or prisoner, as an individual with his or her own story. The passion of the author is to portray prison life as continuous with life in broader society. In prisons, we meet the same cast of characters, the same temptations, the same dangers, and the same rewards as on the outside. Rather than regarding prisons as separate worlds, we should regard them as extensions of the society in which we live. This is important because there is a continuous flow between prisons and the broader society. Those who go to prison usually return to society. Understanding how prisons work will help us as we consider how to reintegrate former prisoners into our society. As the author argues, this is difficult but important work.

Book excerpt: The 1970s were tumultuous years in American prisons, beginning with the bloody uprising at Attica and ending with the even bloodier one at New Mexico State. The Massachusetts prison system was one of the most seriously afflicted. Murders, suicides, riots, strikes, and mass escapes were only the most obvious manifestations of a system in turmoil.

Book On the Other Side of the Bars

Download or read book On the Other Side of the Bars written by Dan M. Reynolds and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2012-09 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we got there, we saw helicopters and smoke coming from the burning buildings. We saw a large number of inmates, many clinging to a fence. We witnessed National Guard troops inside the prison with their weapons, marching in step to their posts. We saw guardsmen on top of the walls and on top of buildings. I never thought that I would end up working there, much less as the warden, some eighteen years later. Author Dan Reynolds has written an enthralling account of a decades-long career in Oklahoma corrections. In On the Other Side of the Bars, he spills his heart about everything from how it felt to live through his first execution as a warden after only ninety days on the job to the joyfully uplifting moments of seeing the wisdom of experience bear fruit. For those considering entering a career in corrections, he also details the most critical components of a safe and secure prison for staff to work in—and inmates to live in. Learn how it feels to have to deal head on with a riot, and discover why the author is mentioned in a John Grisham book.

Book Alcatraz Screw

    Book Details:
  • Author : George H. Gregory
  • Publisher : University of Missouri Press
  • Release : 2013-12-17

  • Pages : 264 pages

Download or read book Alcatraz Screw written by George H. Gregory and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2013-12-17 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alcatraz Screw is a firsthand account from a prison guard’s perspective of some of the most storied years at the infamous U.S. Penitentiary at Alcatraz. George Gregory began his career as a guard for the Federal Bureau of Prisons in 1940. Following his training, he was sent to the federal prison at Sandstone, Minnesota. A few years later he enlisted in the Marine Corps. Badly wounded at Iwo Jima, he returned to Sandstone after a long rehabilitation. When the Bureau of Prisons closed Sandstone in 1947, Gregory was transferred to Alcatraz, which had been a federal penitentiary since 1934. For the next fifteen years, Gregory worked on “The Rock.” He takes the reader along on a correctional officer’s tour of duty, showing what it was like to pull a lonely, tedious night of sentry duty in the Road Tower, or witness illicit transactions in the clothing room, or forcibly quell a riot in the cell blocks. Gregory provides an insider’s account of the tenures of all four of Alcatraz’s wardens and their sometimes contradictory approaches to administering the institution. He knew and regularly interacted with such legendary inmates as Robert Stroud (the Birdman of Alcatraz) and George “Machine Gun” Kelly. Without glamorizing or demonizing either the staff or the convicts, Alcatraz Screw provides a candid portrayal of corruption, drug abuse, and sexual practices, as well as efforts at reform and unrecorded acts of kindness. Various incidents in the memoir convey the fear, hatred, frustration, boredom, and unavoidable tension of being incarcerated. With the inclusion of maps and diagrams of Alcatraz Island, as well as photographs of inmates, officers, and the prison itself, this book offers insight into life at the notorious Alcatraz from an unprecedented perspective.

Book The Accidental Warden

Download or read book The Accidental Warden written by Brook Carey and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-04 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In March 1975, Brook Carey was selected from among three hundred applicants to serve as warden of the California Institution for Women even though she had no background in Corrections. She was handed a ring of keys and a paperback copy of Helter Skelter, the story of Charles Manson. Nobody told her that the plan was for her to be a figurehead while her subordinates ran the prison behind her back. So begins the improbable-but true-story, told by Carey herself, of an outsider's tumultuous year inside the hidden world of California's women's correctional system. Her scant orientation scarcely prepared her for the challenges: an inadequate budget, a stifling bureaucracy, a riot threat, and, oh yes, the Manson Family. It just so happened that Carey's new workplace was home to the "Manson girls", and the determined followers of Manson took delight in making death threats to wardens who incarcerated Manson "Family" members. Against the odds, Carey used creativity and courage as she confronted a dangerous and daunting environment, making essential improvements for inmates and meeting personally with Charles Manson at San Quentin. The Accidental Warden is both an astonishing tale of one woman rising to the occasion and an extraordinary look into the mysterious micro-society of a women's prison.
